Restore or Import Database To A New Computer - Initial Setup - em Client
Many users of this forum have had issues with restoring backups. In fact the help file for
emclient does not ever say how to restore a backup if needed.
1. The way it is supposed to work is you click on menu/file/restore But for some reason
this has not worked for many members of this forum.
2, In addition to saving a backup to an external USB drive using the eMClient backup
process I also have two folders on the same USB drive back up and I copy the
complete emClient data from the C/Users/Username/AppData/Local/emClient to one
backup folder and then I copy
C/Users/Username/AppData/Roaming/emClient to another backup folder.
That way all I need to do for a new setup is simply copy these two folders back to the
C drive when I install emClient on a new computer.

It’s easy - just run eM Client and use the Menu > File > Restore option. If you have more
than one backup file in your backup folder, you will be able to select a backup based on the
date it was made. If you don’t have any backup files, the program will let you select the
location from where to load backups.
The best way to move eM Client to another computer, and to ensure all your data and
settings are brought over is through Backup and Restore. If you are having difficulty with
that, here are a few easy steps to get it done:
1. Create a backup through Menu > Backup (Menu > File > Backup in eM Client 7 and
older)

2. Deactivate your license if you are no longer going to use eM Client on this device in
Menu > Help > License
3. Find the .ZIP backup file and move it to your new device (default in …\Documents\eM
Client)

I do not know where you have placed the Backup file from your old computer on your new
computer but to restore that does not matter.
When you try to restore and you get the error message you will have the choice to navigate
to where you placed it, do this, select the ZIP file and restore from there.
¡Buena suerte!

Also when you try to restore an eM Client backup, do the dated backup files appear in a list
to select from when you go to “Menu / File / Restore” ?

eM Client v7
Hey Emily
cgates 27d
I am having this same problem after 7 months when this post was started. I created the
backup on a Windows 10 PC running emclient v10.0.3266 and I am trying to restore the
backup zip file on a Windows 11 PC with emclient version 10.0.3351. So only a minor
version difference.
The zip file is located in “documents/eM Client”, and I get the same error (when I use
File|restore) that “Selected folder does not contain any backup files. Please select another
location”… I have placed the zip file in other folders and it cannot find them in the file
explorer dialog that emclient displays for trying other folders.

If you have put the eM Client backup.zip file from your Win 10 user profile “Documents \ eM
Client” folder into the same Win 11 user profile “Documents \ eM Client” folder and eM
Client is not finding it when you restore via "Menu \ File \ Restore, then sounds like there is
a problem with the backup.zip file.
1). Either create another backup on the Win 10 again and see if it then restores ok on the
Win 11 Pc. Could have been something went wrong with the backup.zip file when it was
created.

Or
2). Alternatively upgrade the eM Client V10.0.3266 on Win 10 to V10.0.3351 and then make
a new backup.zip and try copying that to the Win 11 Pc and see if that then restores ok.
Or
3). If that still won’t work (where it normally does), then close eM Client on the Win 10 Pc
and go to the following hidden database location
C:\Users\yourusername\AppData\Roaming\eM Client\ and “copy the complete folder
contents to an external drive”. Then on the Win 11 Pc, close eM Client and go to the same
hidden database folder location and paste that complete Win 10 eM Client hidden database
folder. Then open eM Client on the Win 11 Pc and it should work fine.

Well I fixed it using option 4 (yeah I know you only listed 3 options ), The backup zip file
that would not show up on restore, seemed to have everything that was in the roaming
folder you called out in option 3, so I just unzipped the backup zip file into the roaming
folder, and everything seems to work fine.
So there is a problem with restore not being able to find or work with a valid zip file.
Thanks for your help

The only problem, as far as I know, of Restore not being able to find the Zip file is that eMC
has not been configured to point to it, to configure go to:
In v9: Menu ->Settings ->General ->Backup
In v10: It is somewhere similar (I don’t have v10 on this computer & I can’t remember
exactly)
The default location is …Documents/eM Client - create the folder if it does not exist
¡Buena
