The Argumentative Indian is a book written by Nobel Prize-winning Indian
economist Amartya Sen. It is a collection of essays that discuss India's history and
identity, focusing on the traditions of public debate and intellectual pluralism.

 The long history of the argumentative tradition in India

 The main misconceptions about democracy in India which Sen has sought to
dispel is the assumption that India was gifted the practice of democracy by
the western word and it simply adopted democracy after its independence

 Sen argues that argumentation was the major contribution to the development
of democracy in India and democratic factors were present in India from
ancient times.

ancient Greece and Rome, the heritage of Indians – in fact of all people of the

 The Brahmanical dominance was questioned after the later Vedic Period
during the Intellectual revolution of 6th Century by Buddhism and Jainism
