Welding General: Welding of plate joint, joints in pipeline shall

comply with the latest edition of standard Mentioned above
and AWWA C206,and AWSD 10.12 and as further specified
herein, All joints shall have the plate edges accurately
prepared to the appropriate profile for welding. The parts shall
then be assembled and accurately checked before welding
proceeds. The welding and fabricating procedure shall be such
that residual stresses are a minimum and distortion avoided
special attention shall be given to ensure that, after
machining, distortion does not occur to affect the alignment
and operation of the part concerned. Welding procedure shall
be in accordance With the API standard 650, 1104, and ASME
Boiler and pressure vessel Code Section IX. Each unit shall be
fabricated, and welding completed before that machining or
other fitting work is carried out. All fillet welds shall be
continuous. Electrodes used shall be low hydrogen type and
shall comply with the requirements of an international
standard as approved by the engineer. Only stainless steel
electrodes shall be used for welding stainless steel. Stainless
Steel to be welded shall be suitably stabilized, Heated storage
and ovens shall be provided for the electrodes

Only skilled, qualified and tested welders shall be employed.

The welders shall be tested in accordance with ASME Boiler
and pressure vessel code. Detailed records of welding Shall be
kept, showing the name of each welder against each run in a
weld and any welder found to be producing an unacceptable
amount of defects shall be removed until he has passed the
test again, Where valve bodies, sleeves, etc, are of welded
construction, all longitudinal butt welds in the shell plate shall
be completely radio graphically tested. All circumferential butt
welds and tie-ins in pipes shall be subject to 100%
radiographic inspection. All fillet welds shall be tested by
.ultrasonic crack detection, or ether approval means

WELDING PROCEDURE:

No welding of any kind shall be performed where rain is falling

on such surface or during periods of high wind. Welding must
always take place on clean metal. Surface to be welded must
be free of the following material or defects. Scale, mail, flam-
cut edges, arc gouging scale shall be removed by grinding,
sandblasting or machining . Paints, primers and rust should be
sandblasting, grinding, machining or by using wire brush if it is
completely removed
Grease, oil dye penetrate, Cutting fluid, etc, Shall be .
removed by using solvent. Water-maybe removed by wiping
and or pre-heating. Welding procedure shall not cause under
bead cracking, also; the need for pre- heat of thick plate, pipe
and effect of low atmospheric temperature during welding
shall be considered. Welding procedure shall be produced
elements with the mechanical properties required by design.
The contractor shall prepare welding procedure specification
and shall perform testes documented by procedure
qualification record to support the specification as required by
section IX of ASME Code and any additional provision Of API
Codes. The welding procedure specification shall give all
details of welding processes including those for repair, tank
and attachment weld. The numbers of filer and finish beads
.shall be in accordance with approved procedures

All joint in which welding has started shall be completed

before the end of each day’s work. Avoid arc strikes on parent
metal-strike the arc within the weld area. Slag shall be
removal from each stop before re-striking a new arc and shall
be removed from pass before welding subsequent bead. Tie-ins
shall be carefully aligned to limit residual and/or reaction
stresses after completion of the weld. Tie-ins shall be made
within the temperature rang of 10c to 30c. In very hot weather,
fully welded lengths between restraints shall be protected
.from excessive heat to avoid buckling

Welder's qualification and control All welders employed in the

works shall be fully qualified and shall have successfully
passed testes require by API codes for the type of work.
Welder qualification tests or retests shall be carried out on the
site where they maybe witnessed by the engineer or his
representative. The contractor shall provide necessary labour,
plate and pipe welding, materials and equipment for
performing welder qualification tests on site
Arrangement for the laboratory tests of components, if
required, shall be made and paid for by the contractor. The
contractor shall maintain a list of approved welders agreed
with the engineer and only the persons who are in the list of
approved welders shall be allowed to perform welding
operations on the permanent works. Welding symbols and
notices on welding procedure to be given to welders and
fabricators shall be written in the drawings or on instruction
slips and fully explained to each welders and fabricators prior
to welding work. During welding work, it shall be inspected by
contractor supervisors and field inspector to establish the
welding procedures as stated above are accurately being
followed. Welders shall give special attention to edge
preparation and fit-up base materials to be welded, in
correctness of which shall be reject prior to welding due to its
.major influence on welding performance

Welding quality control All production welds shall be subject

to visual inspection by the engineer. Visual inspection-maybe
carried out at any stage of the welding of a joint. Each-weld
shall be clearly marked adjacent to the welds indicating the
identification of welder. Non distractive testing shall be
carried out on all welds according to API standards 650, 653,
1104. Where ultrasonic tests indicate a flaw or defect in the
.weld this shall be examined using radiographic means

All cost for making radiographs and any necessary repairs

shall be borne by the contractor, however the employer
inspector requires radiograph in excess of the number
specified in API standards and no defect are disclosed, the
cost of additional inspection shall be borne by the employer.
The engineer retains the rights to have repaired or replaced
one weld only for each welder at no cost to the employer.
Welds rejected by the engineer may, at his decision, be
repaired in accordance with API standard 1104, Section -7,
subject to the following :- a) Repairs to the filler weld which
.would penetrate the stringer bead will not be permitted

b) Arc burns shall not be repaired by welding but shall be

removed by grinding provided that no reduction in wall
thickness is made in excess of that permitted by the
specification. The contactor shall maintain records of all
repairs of whatever nature to plate, pipeline, describe and
.locate such repairs
