HRM Case Study 2
HRM Case Study 2
What role, if any, does work life balance play in the success of an
organization? Explain.
Answer: Almost all employees, managerial level or subordinate level, always strive to make good
balance of their work life and the family life. In fact, most of the employees find it very tough to strike
such a balance that could be driving forces to perform well along with completed family responsibilities.
When an employee is able to maintain such a crucial balance, it develops the sense of satisfaction and
contentment and it is observed that happy and satisfied employee generally perform well in an
organization. It can foster the productivity since the work/life balance motivates employee. For instance,
work stress or workload is most important factor that deteriorates the work/life balance in most of the
cases. When an employee bears the workload, it becomes very hard for him/her to manage the
work/life. As a result s/he will develop turnover intentions, which cause the high turnover in an
organization, which may result in additional costs and decreased productivity to organization. However,
if the work stress and work load is at acceptable level and employee is able to maintain the balance of
work/life, s/he will perform productively and may drive an organization towards success.
2. How does diversity in an organization affect the organizational work/life balance? What ethical
considerations exists that may drive the organization to be more work/life balanced?
Answer: Diversity in an organization may be of different kinds. Work force diversity is an example. In
addition, Baxter has acquired many firms outside America, which implies that the operation of business
in Home country and its subsidiaries won’t be possible with same culture. It requires the management
of such cultural diversity in order to ensure the smooth operation of the business. In attempt to balance
the work/life, Baxter has provisioned various work arrangements in its home country. However, the
factors affecting the work/life balance outside America may be different from those of it because the
work force and cultural diversity plays an important role in shaping the family responsibilities. Thus, the
technique that has been used in one country may not fit well in other. In such circumstances, an
organization must come up with even more work arrangements that best suits the employee in making
their work life and family life balanced. Some of the ethical considerations are concern about employee
welfare that most human resource management should pay a good deal of attention. If the employees
are not able to manage their work/life, it may lead to dissatisfaction in work. The employees family
relations may get distorted which may be reflected in his/her performance and productivity as well.
Again, work/life imbalance threats the safety and health of employees. Thus, employee welfare,
motivation, safety and health are some ethical considerations that may drive the organization to be
more work/life balanced. Speaking from the perspective of a principal in an architectural firm of about
120 people, I have found that diversity causes us to be more aware of various situations and provide
benefits in a way that don't skew those benefits so that they are more available to one group than to
another. Also, we have stopped using the term "Work/Life Balance" and instead use "Work/Life
Blend".Work and Life are never balanced. Both create
demands on the individual, and the individual must chose when one takes priority over the other. The
organization cannot do that for them.As long as there's and understanding of what's expected, and what
will be tolerated and what will not be tolerated, the work/life balance usually works okay. But the
organization must protect itself from those who try to game the system and use more of the benefit
than are available to others. Regarding ethical considerations, we always try to be fair, but also we have
to look out for the company as well. Some people will do everything they can to take advantage of their
situation to tilt the balance more toward life than work. Luckily most people aren't like this. The typical
case is where life takes a turn and they must by
