Ever wonder what makes your computer, smartphone, or tablet work? As soon as you power up your
device, thanks to its operating system, or OS, it lights up and performs your actions and commands.
But what exactly is an OS? Simply put, it’s the software that manages all the hardware and software on
your device, ensuring everything runs smoothly. It helps you to connect, create, and explore.
As you start typing on your keyboard, the OS interprets these inputs and displays the corresponding
characters on your screen. It also organizes your files and directories, enabling you to access everything
you need with a single click.
Suppose you decide to print a document. The OS oversees peripheral devices such as the printer,
ensuring they work with your computer. It serves as the link between you and the hardware, providing
an interface for interaction.
However, the role of the OS extends beyond basic tasks. The OS is also responsible for your system’s
security, protecting your data from unauthorized access through several built-in mechanisms, even
without additional software.
Due to its multitasking abilities, the OS can handle multiple programs running simultaneously without a
hitch.
Additionally, modern systems incorporate AI features such as digital assistants and voice recognition,
making advanced technology accessible to you.
You might already know a few common OSs such as Microsoft Windows, MacOS, Linux distributions, iOS,
and Android. These are found in a range of devices, from desktops to mobile gadgets, driving the digital
world.
Microsoft Windows, developed in the mid-1980s, is the most widely used OS in the world due to its
preinstallation on many PCs. MacOS, formerly known as OS X, comes with all Macintosh computers.
Linux provides more flexibility and is free, with various available versions. It’s a family of open-source
OSs and can be shared with anyone across the world. It offers extensive customization options, allowing
users to personalize and adjust system settings and appearances to suit individual preferences.
And then, there are mobile devices, typically running on iOS by Apple or Android by Google. Each OS
performs several key functions such as process management, memory management, file system
management, error detection and handling, and software management.
Indeed, OSs are making technology efficient and secure for all.
