(a) systems/operations:
() steam raising in a steam boiler.
(i) airwater cooling of an IC engine cylinder.
(iii) condensation of steam in acondenser,
(iv) heating of water in a bucket with immersion heater
(b) A 10 cm diameter copper ball is to be heated from 100Cto an
average
temperature of i 50°C in 30 minutes. Taking the average density and
specific heat of copper in this temperature range to be p 8950 kg m
andC, = 0.39$ kJ/Kg "C, respectively. Determine
(a) the total amount of heat transter to the copper ball.
(b) the average rate of heat transter to the ball,
(c) the average heat flux

Q.2. 3 5 A plane slab of thickness 60cm is made of a material of thermal

conductivity 17.5 W/m-deg. The iett side of the slab absorbs a net
amount of radiant energy from aradiant source at the rate $30 W/m. lt
the right hand face of the slab is at aconstant
temperature 38°C, set up an
expression for temperature distribution within the slab as a function of
relevant space co-ordinates. Therefrom work out the temperature at the
midplane of the slab and the maximum tempcrature within the slab. It
may be presumed that the temperature distribution is steady and here is
no heat generation.
