XII CHEMISTRY

EXPERIMENT -1

Aim: To prepare M/20 solution of Ferrous Ammonium Sulphate (Mohr’s salt) and using
this solution find out the molarity and strength of the given KMnO4 solution.

Materials required: Measuring flask, Burette, Pipette, Conical Flask, Funnel, Measuring
Cylinder, Watch glass, Wash bottle, Mohr’s salt, Potassium
permanganate, Sulphuric acid, Distilled water

Theory: The reaction between KMnO4 and Mohr’s salt solution is a redox reaction and the
titration is therefore called redox titration. KMnO4 acts as oxidising agent and Mohr’s salt as
reducing agent. Dilute H2SO4 is used to provide acidic medium.

Indicator: KMnO4 is a self-indicator.

End Point: Colourless to permanent pink colour.

Chemical Equations:
Molecular equation:

2 KMnO4 + 3 H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 + 3H2O + 5[O]

2FeSO4.(NH4)2 SO4 + H2SO4 + [O] → Fe2(SO4)3 +2(NH4)2SO4 + 13H2O] x 5
2 KMnO4 + 10FeSO4(NH4)2SO4 .6 H2O +8 H2SO4 → K2SO4 + 2MnSO4 +5Fe2(SO4)3
+10(NH4)2SO4 + 68H2O

Ionic equation:

MnO4 - + 8 H+ + 5e- → Mn2+ + 4H2O

Fe2+ → Fe3+ + e- ] x 5
_______________________________________________________
MnO4 - + 8 H++ 5 Fe2+→ 5Fe3++ Mn2+ + 4H2O

Molecular mass of Mohr’s salt, FeSO4.(NH4)2SO4.6H2O =392

Hence, for preparing 1000ml of 1M Mohr’s salt solution,
Mohr’s salt required=392 g
So, for preparing 250 ml of M/20 Mohr’s salt solution,
392 1
Mohr’s salt required= 1000 x 250 x 20 = 4.9 g

Observations:

Weight of Mohr’s salt = 4.90 g

Volume of Mohr’s salt solution prepared= 250 ml
XII CHEMISTRY

Molarity of Mohr’s salt solution=M/20

Volume of Mohr’s salt solution taken for each titration= 10.0 ml

1. 0.0 ml 10.4 ml 10.4 ml
2. 0.0 ml 10.3 ml 10.3 ml
3. 0.0 ml 10.3 ml 10.3 ml
Concordant volume= 10.3 ml

Calculations: (a) Molarity of the KMnO4 solution

From the overall balanced chemical equation, it is clear that 2 moles of
KMnO4 react with 10 moles of Mohr’s salt.
M KMnO4 x V KMnO4 2
 = 10
M Mohr’s salt 4 x V Mohr’s salt
where M KMnO = Molarity of KMnO4 solution
4

V KMnO = Volume of KMnO4 solution

4

M Mohr’s salt = Molarity of Mohr’s salt solution

V Mohr’s salt = Volume of Mohr’s salt solution
M KMnO4 x 10.3 2
 =
1/20 x 10 10

2 1 1
M KMnO = 4 x = M = 0.0097 M
10 20.6 103

(b) Strength of the KMnO4 solution:

Strength (in g/L) = Molarity x Molar Mass
1
= x 158
103

= 1.53 g/L
1
Result: The molarity of the given KMnO4 solution is M and strength is = 1.53 g/L
103

Precautions:
1. Always rinse the burette and pipette with the solutions taken in them.
2. Always use freshly prepared solution of ferrous ammonium sulphate.
3. In case of coloured solution, read the upper meniscus.
4. The lower end of pipette should remain dipped in solution while sucking the liquid.
