What is a Computer Network?

A computer network is a system of interconnected devices (computers, servers, printers, and

other hardware) that communicate and share resources such as files, applications, and
internet access. These devices are linked via wired or wireless communication channels
such as cables, Wi-Fi, or satellite systems.

Types of Computer Networks

1. Personal Area Network (PAN):

• Scope: Very small, typically within a single room.

• Example: Bluetooth connection between a smartphone and a headset.

2. Local Area Network (LAN):

• Scope: Limited to a single building or campus.

• Example: A network in an office or school.

• Technology: Ethernet or Wi-Fi.

3. Metropolitan Area Network (MAN):

• Scope: Spans a city or a large area, larger than a LAN but smaller than a
WAN.

• Example: Cable TV networks.

4. Wide Area Network (WAN):

• Scope: Covers a large geographical area such as a country or even

worldwide.

• Example: The Internet.

5. Virtual Private Network (VPN):

• Scope: Creates a secure network over a public network (e.g., the Internet).

• Example: Remote workers accessing company resources securely.

6. Storage Area Network (SAN):

• Scope: Dedicated to storage devices and servers for high-speed data access.

• Example: Enterprise-level data storage systems.

Advantages of Computer Networks

1. Resource Sharing:

• Devices like printers, scanners, and storage can be shared among multiple
users.

2. Data Sharing:

• Files and data can be shared quickly and efficiently between connected
devices.

3. Centralized Management:

• Administrators can manage resources, security, and updates from a central

location.

4. Communication:

• Facilitates email, instant messaging, video conferencing, and VoIP.

5. Scalability:

• Networks can expand to include additional devices without significant effort.

6. Cost Efficiency:

• Reduces hardware costs by sharing resources and improves productivity.

7. Improved Security:

• Centralized monitoring and control ensure better security protocols.

8. Access to Remote Resources:

• Users can access network resources from remote locations via technologies
like VPN.

9. Enhanced Collaboration:

• Teams can collaborate in real time by sharing files and working on shared
platforms.
