The Router:
Router is a device that connects two or more packet-switched subnetworks.
It serves two primary functions: managing traffic between these networks by
forwarding intended data packets to Internet addresses, and allowing multiple
devices to use the same IP connection.
As it connects devices together on a local area network (LAN) and allows them
to connect to the Internet, it is a more advanced device than a switch or hub
because it can direct traffic between different networks.

How a router works?

A router directs any data packet transmission with the specified IP address
from one network to another or within a network. It does this by providing a
local IP address to each device over the Internet; It ensures the correct
destination so that the data reaches the right place instead of being lost within
the network. It discovers the best and fastest path and then sends data
packets from that path to the connected devices within the network. It works
similar to a delivery packet with a specific address to reach only the right
recipient.

Differences between switch & router:

• The main purpose of a router is to connect different networks

simultaneously.
• The main purpose of a switch is to connect different devices simultaneously.
• The router works in the network layer and the switch device works in the
data link layer.
• Router data is sent in packet form.
• Switching data is transmitted in packet and frame form.
 Connect two networks using one router.

 First - the tools used:

• 2 Switch
• Router
• Connection copper
• Pc-pt2
• Laptop2

 Second - Implementation steps:

• We connect 2 computers with the first switching device, then we give this
network IP addresses starting from
192.168.1.0, where we give the first computer 192.168.1.1 and the second
192.168.1.2.
• We repeat the same steps with the other switching device, where we
connect it to 2 computers and give IP addresses starting from 192.168.2.0
• We connect the switch device to the router. When connecting, we choose
the port to be connected to in the router, where
For the first ported switch we choose GigabitEthernet0/0 and for the other
switch we choose GigabitEthernet0/1
• From the router settings, we choose config. We choose the first port, turn it
on, and put in it an address belonging to the network 192.168.1.0.
• We repeat the same steps and choose the second port and set the address
for the second network 192.168.2.1
• The last step in computer settings is to put the link address that was used in
the router in the default gateway option
• We test the connection by sending a message from one computer to another
computer in the other network.
Third - Practical application:

Fourth - Conclusion:

• If a message is sent from one computer to another, the switch sends it to

the router.
 The router analyzes it and redirects it to the desired device.
 Connecting two networks using two router.

 First - the tools used:

 2 Switch
 2 Router
 Connection copper
 Pc-pt3
 Laptop

 Second - Implementation steps:

We connect 2 computers with the first switching device and then

give this network IP addresses starting from
192.168.1.0, where we give the first computer 192.168.1.1 and the
second 192.168.1.2.
• We repeat the same steps with the other switching device, where
we connect it to 2 computers and give IP addresses starting from
192.168.2.0
• We connect the switch device to the first router. When
connecting, we choose the port we want to connect to in the
router, where we choose the port GigabitEthernet0/0 for the first
switch.
• We connect the switch of the other network to the second router
and choose the first port, GigabitEthernet0/0.
• From the router settings, we choose config. We choose the first
port and put in it an address belonging to the network
192.168.0.1.
• We repeat the same steps for the second router, choose the first
port, and set the address of the second network to 192.168.2.1.
•From the computer settings, we put the link address that was
used on the router in the default getaway option.
• We open the router settings and choose physical. We choose the
WIC-2T addon and install it in the router. We repeat the same step
for the second router.
• We connect the first router to the second with a serial dce wire, so
we choose port 0 serial on each router.
• From the router settings, we choose port 0 serial, we say turn it
on, and we set an IP address for the connection, where the first
router is 10.0.0.1 and the second is 10.0.0.2.
• The last step is to configure the connection by entering the
settings of the first router, and from the config menu, we choose
static. In the network box, we put the address of the network to
which we want to connect, which is the second network,
192.168.2.0. In the mask box, we write 255, and in the last hop
box, we write the corresponding serial address, which is 10.0. 0.2
We repeat the same steps on the second router.
• We test the connection by sending a message from one computer
to another computer on the other network.
Third - Practical application:
 Connect three networks using three routers.
 First - the tools used:

 3 Router
 3 switches
 3 pc-pt
 3 Laptop
 Copper Cables.

Second - Implementation steps:

1- We connect the three computers using the first switch, giving the IP
address 192.168.1.1 to the router on this network, 192.168.1.5 to the
first computer, and 192.168.1.6 to the other.
2- The two computers are connected by another switch and the router
on that network is set with the IP address 192.168.2.1 and the first
computer is 192.168.2.5 and the other is 192.168.2.6.
3- Then the three computers are connected by another switch and the
router is set on that network with the IP address 192.168.3.1 and the
first computer is 192.168.3.5 and the other is 192.168.3.6.
4- The first router on that network is assigned the IP address
192.168.4.1, the pull router 192.168.4.2, and three routers
192.168.4.3.
5- After setting up the Ethernet IP port on the router, we enable the
port status and wait for the network to boot.
6- When a message is sent from one computer to another, the switch
sends it to the router. The router analyzes it and forwards it to the
correct device (target)
Third - Practical application:

Fourth - Conclusion:

It can be concluded that routers play a crucial role in directing data traffic
between different networks. They are needed to connect devices on a local
network to the Internet and provide services such as network address
translation (NAT) and firewall protection to secure the network.
