I. INTRODUCTORY CONCEPT

Do you believe that whatever we conceive in our minds may possibly


happen in the future? Yet, it depends upon how close it is to reality. This lesson
will give you knowledge and help you understand the process of expressing
ideas in the future with the use of future real and unreal conditionals. Learning
how to use accurate words/expressions will give you confidence in expressing
your thoughts in appropriate time, manner, and situation.

II. OBJECTIVES:
At the end of this learning activity, you will be able to:

Competency: Use conditionals in expressing arguments


a. Distinguish a future real and future unreal conditional sentence;
b. Determine the correctness in the form of the verb in future real and unreal
conditional sentences

III. ACTIVITIES
Task 1 Directions: Distinguish which among the given two future conditional sentences used the correct
forms of verb. Encircle the letter of the correct answer.

1. A. If she says okay, I will go.


B. If she said okay, I will go.
2. A. If Toni asked for help, I helped him.
B. If Toni asked for help, I would help him.
3. A. She would be cancelling her flight if she were going alone.
B. She will be cancelling her flight if she were going alone.

DEFINITION DEFINITION
-describes what you think you will do in a specific -is used to talk about imaginary situations in the future
situation in the future -this form looks like present unreal conditional, so out
-it is different from other real conditional forms of its three forms, many native speakers prefer Form
because unlike the present or the past, you do not 2
know what will happen in the future
-Although this form is called real, you are usually
imagining or guessing about the future
-In future real conditional sentence, “if” suggests that
you do not know if something will happen or not, but
“when” suggests that something will definitely
happen at some point; you are simply waiting for it to
occur.
FORM FORMS
 FORM 1 (MOST COMMON FORM)
[If/When…simple present……simple future]
Or [If…simple past…, would + verb….]
[…simple future…If/when…. simple present…] Or
[…. would +verb…. If…...simple past]
EXAMPLES
If she cancels it, I will not come. EXAMPLES
When things go wrong, I will try harder. If Sam continued studying, he would graduate this
year.
Note that in the if-clause of a future real conditional, If I had one last chance, I would correct my mistakes.
the verbs are in simple present tense (cancels/go),
while the verbs in the result clause are in the simple Note that in the if-clause of a future unreal conditional,
future using the word “will” (will not come/ will try) the verbs are in simple past tense (continued/had),
while the verbs in the result-clause follows the formal,
past modal + base verb (would graduate/would
correct).

EXAMPLES
If I were playing a violin, I would be choosing the
easiest piece.
If I were singing the song, it would be hurting your
ears.

 FORM 3

[If…. were going to + verb..,… would be +


present participle…]
Or
[…would be + present participle.. if..were going
to + verb…}

EXAMPLES
If I were going to play a violin, I would be choosing the
easiest piece.
If I were going to sing the song, it would be hurting
your ears.

Note that Form 3 is a variation of Form 2. They differ


in the structure of the if-clause.
