17 On a large arable farm in Alabama there is a population of mice and
cats. At time t the number of mice is m and the number of cats is c.

It is assumed that:

• The number of cats increases at a rate proportional to the

number of mice. When there are 55 mice the number of cats is
increasing at a rate of 6 cats per unit period of time.
• If no cats are present the number of mice would increase by
130 % .
• When both cats and mice are present the cats kill the mice at
a rate equal to 110 % the number of cats.
• At time t = 0 there are 20 cats and 120 mice.

a) Construct a set of coupled di erential equations to model this

situation and solve to nd a mathematical model for the number
of mice.
