Q No.1: (Initial Stability, Free Surface Effect)


A cuboid barge is 40-m long, with a beam of 15 m and a depth of 3 m. It has a total
mass of 600 tonnes and floats in freshwater with level trim. G lies at 1 m above the keel.
There is a cuboidal tank located on the upper deck of the barge, 20-m long, 10-m wide
and 2-m deep, centred symmetrically. Oil with a specific gravity of 0.8 is added to this
tank to a depth of 1 m. Assume the tank sides are high enough so that the oil can slosh

correction for the tank to find 𝐺𝑀̅̅̅̅̅f. Is the loaded barge stable?
freely. Find the metacentric height of the barge, then calculate the free surface

Hint: as oil is added to the tank, the total displacement of the barge will change. Find the
new displacement at the start, before computing the position of the centre of buoyancy
and the displaced volume.

Q No.2: (Change in Centre of Gravity, Initial Stability, Angle Of Heel)


A catamaran floating crane shown in Figure 2 has the upperworks supported by a pair
of pontoons. The pontoons are cuboids, each 20-m long, 4-m wide and 4-m deep. The
centreline of each pontoon is 8 m off the crane’s centreline. Each pontoon has a mass
of 40 tonnes, and the crane upperworks has a mass of 240 tonnes. The pontoons can
be considered to be homogenous in structure, with their centres of gravity GP at half
their height. The centre of gravity of the crane upperworks GU is 16 m above the keel
line. The catamaran is floating with no angle of list in freshwater with a density of 1.00
te·m-3.

a) Determine the metacentric height 𝐺𝑀̅̅̅̅̅T of the floating crane in this condition,
Hint: the pontoons have a level draught of 2 m. Try to calculate it anyway, though.

and comment on whether the crane has sufficient stability to be safe in the design
condition.
b) The crane lifts a mass of 8 tonnes at a distance from the centreline of 15 m. If
small angle assumptions remain valid (i.e. the metacentre does not move), estimate the
heel angle that will result.

Q No.3: (Inclining Experiment)


An inclining experiment is performed on a cruise ship, which has the following
characteristics when the experiment is undertaken:
 Displaced volume ¿ 11,520 m3 ;
 I xx =56,000 m4;
 KB at this draught ¿ 4 m ;
 Seawater density ¿ 1.025 te/m3.
All tanks are either empty or pressed full for the inclining experiment. A 30-te weight is
moved from the centerline by 10 m athwartships, causing a 10−m long pendulum to
deflect by 0.08 m.
a. Find BM T ;
b. Find GM ⊤ in the inclined condition;
c. Find KG in the inclined condition.

Q No. 4: (KG Calculation) A ship of 3500 tonnes light displacement and light KG 6.4 m
has to load 9600 tonnes of cargo. The KG of the lower hold is 4.5 m, and that of the
tween deck is 9 m. The load KM is 6.2 m and, when loading is completed, the righting
moment at 6 degrees of heel is required to be (R No/P No Last 3 Digit) tonnes m.
Calculate the amount of cargo to be loaded into the lower hold and tween deck,
respectively.
Q No. 5: (Angle Of List) A ship of 12 500 tonnes displacement, KM 7 m and KG 6.4 m,
has a 3 degree list to starboard and has yet to load 500 tonnes of cargo. There is space
available in the tween decks, centres of gravity 6 m each side of the centreline. Find
how much cargo to load on each side if the ship is to complete loading upright.
