Estimation of Total Hardness of water

Aim

To estimate the amount of total hardness in a given water sample. You are provided with 0.01
M EDTA solution.

Principle

Ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDTA) can be represented as H4Y, where H represents the
acidic H-atoms and Y represents the remaining organic part. EDTA exists as divalent anion (H 2Y2-)
at about pH = 10. The anion complexes with metal ions (M2+) present in hard water.

H2Y2- + M2+ MH2Y

The titration is conducted using an indicator Eriochrome Black T (EBT). EBT forms a wine red
colored complex, M-EBT with the metal ion M2+ at pH around 10. But M-EBT complex is less
stable than M-EDTA, thus free indicator is generated near the end point and color of the
solution changes from wine red to blue

M- EBT + EDTA M- EDTA + EBT

(wine red) (blue)

Here NH4OH-NH4Cl buffer solution is used to maintain pH around 10, only at this pH, the
indicator EBT can form a complex with the metal ion.

Procedure
2ml buffer
100 ml standard hard water is pipetted into a 250 ml conical flask and a pinch of EBT indicator
also added. The solution is then titrated against standard EDTA solution taken in the burette till
the colour changes from wine-red to blue.

Repeat the titration to get concordant values.

Result

The total hardness of the given sample of water =........... ppm

Observations and Calculations

Hard water X standard EDTA solution. Indicator: EBT

SI No Vol. of Hard Burette reading Vol. of EDTA

water (V1 mL) solution (V2 mL)
Initial Final

Vol. of hard water, V1 = 100 mL

Vol. of EDTA solution, V2 = .....mL

At the end point,

The no of moles of Hard water = No. of moles of EDTA

V1M1 = V2M2

Molarity of hard water, M1 = V2M2/V1

= ......

Total hardness in terms of CaCO3 equivalents = M1×100×1000 mg/L or ppm

= ......... ppm
