ARITHMETIC SERIES
Learning Target:

I can determine the partial sum of an arithmetic sequence

Arithmetic Series
Arithmetic Series is the sum of the terms of an arithmetic sequence.

Example:

Find the sum of the first 4 terms of the arithmetic sequence

1, 5, 9, 13, … .

Answer: 1 + 5 + 9 + 13 = 28

The formula in getting the sum of n terms (denoted by 𝑆𝑛 ) is

𝒏 𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = 𝟐 𝟐𝒂𝟏 + 𝒏 − 𝟏 𝒅 or 𝑺𝒏 = 𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂 𝒏
𝟐
EXAMPLE 1.10 PG. 8

Determine the sum of the first 12 terms of the arithmetic

sequence 4, 13, 22, 31, … .

Solution:
𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = 𝟐 𝟐𝒂𝟏 + 𝒏−𝟏 𝒅
𝟏𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝟐 𝟐 𝟒 + 𝟏𝟐 − 𝟏 𝟗
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝟔 𝟖 + 𝟗𝟗
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝟔𝟒𝟐
EXAMPLE
Determine the sum of the first 12 terms of the arithmetic
sequence with 1st term -6 and 12th term 38.

Solution:
𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = (𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝒏 )
𝟐
𝟏𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = (−𝟔 + 𝟑𝟖)
𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝟔 𝟑𝟐
𝑺𝟏𝟐 = 𝟏𝟗𝟐
RECAP:

The formula in getting the sum of n terms (denoted by 𝑆𝑛 ) is

𝒏 𝒏
𝑺𝒏 = 𝟐 𝟐𝒂𝟏 + 𝒏 − 𝟏 𝒅 or 𝑺𝒏 = (𝒂𝟏 + 𝒂𝒏 )
