Resume Writing

A Resume or Curriculum Vitae (CV) is a

document having a summary of relevant job
experience, skills and education for the
purpose of getting a job through interview. The
job application letter must be drafted with
special attention and the language used should
be polite. As per the requirement of the
professionals/ technocrats, there are three
types of Resume, which are as follow:

1. Functional Resume: This resume focuses on the skills and experience which are
required by the company. It does not include chronological history of the applicant’s
work or other degrees which are not required. It includes only the required
information. It is suitable for those people who change their job frequently and those
who have gaps in their employment history.

2. Chronological Resume: This resume includes the history of the skills and the
experience of different jobs and posts. The writer starts by the latest/ present job
first and goes down by the older ones in decreasing order. Most of the companies
prefer this because it is very easy to analyze all skills and qualities of the candidate.

3. Combination Resume: This includes skills and experience first. Employment history
is listed afterwards. In it the candidate highlights his/ her skills that are relevant for
the company’s requirement. The candidate also includes the chronological history
that the employer prefers.

Tips for Effective Resume Writing:

Consider the tips for writing effective Resume Writing:

1. Know the Job: Before writing resume the candidate must know the nature of job for
which he is applying for. Previous knowledge about the job and the company is
mandatory. Such information is available on company’s website. An effective resume
is always tailored to the specific job. The candidate should be efficient enough to
expose his suitability for the concerned job and the company he is going to join.
What skills does the company require? Therefore, Specific knowledge, experience,
and exposure in the required field should be mentioned in resume. These are all
things to keep in mind while drafting resume. The candidate is free to take the help
of the company’s website. Along with this, it is also mandatory to know, “What
does the company want?” What is its vision” What is its future program? What is
the annual turn-over? What kind of products does it manufacturer or sale?

2. Experience: A candidate is required to mention the experience and exposure of his

knowledge to substantiate his suitability for the required job. Therefore, a list of the
previous jobs, where the candidate has served, should be prepared in descending or
ascending order along with the present job.

3. Hobbies and Interests. It is mandatory to mention the interest and hobbies because
these represent the psychology of the candidate. It is also mandatory to know the
benefits of the selected hobbies. A candidate must list those hobbies that represent
him as a team-oriented, energetic, active and confident individual rather than as a
passive person. Every company required a candidate who works well with others.
Some positive hobbies are: captain of soccer, cricket, football team, organizer a charity
event for an orphanage, secretary of school’s student-run government, team leader
of a project etc. while the other hobbies like: watching TV, doing puzzles, reading
show a passive personality.

4. Other skills: Along with academic qualification the recruiters look for other extra
skills like the exposure of the candidate to the other languages except English,
Computer skills specialization in MS Word, Excel, Word-press, Tally etc.

Essentials for Writing Resume:

5. Identification of the Applicant: The applicant should begin his resume with his
name, address; e-mail ID, mobile number on the top of the resume. It is advised to
highlight name by increasing its front size or making it bold. It is because it is eye-

catchy and the panel easily gets the view of the candidate’s personal information
easily.
6. Applicant’s Personal Profile. Here, an applicant writes about himself, skills,
experience and personal qualities which are important for the job he is applying for.
Although this part is optional but it gives some more details of applicant to the
reviewer. This part of the resume is sometimes very important as it sells applicant’s
skills, experiences, and personal qualities. Therefore, it should be original and well-
written. Here a candidate is required to use positive and powerful words like:
adaptable, confident, determined, positive, enthusiastic etc.
7. Education and Qualifications. After the personal profile, the applicant should write
about his academic education and qualifications. While writing about qualification
it is mandatory to write the course name, year of passing, board/ university and
percentage. This part of resume is much more sensitive as it gives the complete
picture of one’s academic knowledge. The order of sections is up to you. List your
education in reverse chronological order. List your qualification in Descending Order
(now-then).
8. Create a section for your work experience. This is the section in which you should
list all of your relevant work experience. List the name of the company, the location
of the company, the years you worked there, and what you did. Start with your most
recent job and work backwards. If you have a long list of work experience, only put
the experiences relevant to the job you are applying for.
9. Create a section for your skills and achievements. This section is where you list the
things you accomplished at your previous jobs, and the skills you have developed
through your experiences. This is also the section where you list any of your published
work, lectures you’ve given, classes you’ve taught, etc.
Example achievements: Successfully took a national bestseller from manuscript to
publication; Received certification in copy-editing from UC Berkeley.
10. Create a section for other information. If there is a noticeable gap in your CV or
there is some other information you would like to share, put it in this section.
11. Create a section for References. These are people you have worked with in the past
such as professors, previous employers, etc. that have seen your work and can credibly
support praises that they give you. The company you are applying to may contact
these references to find out more about your previous work. You should talk with
the person you would like to list a reference before actually listing them—it is best to
double check that they still have the same number, are ok with giving you a reference,
or that they remember who you are. Write down their full names, contact information
and e-mail,
