2.) Given the function .

a. Determine the domain, range, intercepts, positive/negative intervals, and increasing/decreasing intervals.

b. Use your answers for part (a) to sketch the graph of the reciprocal function.

3.) Conclusions:
● All the y-coordinates of a reciprocal function are the ___________________ of the y-coordinates of the original
function.
● The graph of the reciprocal function has a _____________________________ at each zero of the original function.
● A reciprocal function has the same ____________________________ intervals as the original function.
● Where the original function is ___________________ (excluding the zeros), the reciprocal function is
____________________.

Notes 3.3b - Graphs of Rational Functions
Things to do when graphing reciprocal functions.
● Factor and simplify as much as possible (Make sure to include domain restrictions.)
● Determine any vertical asymptotes (where restrictions are that still remain in the denominator of the
simplified fraction).
● Determine any points of discontinuity - also known as holes (where restrictions are that have divided
out in the simplified fraction).
● Determine any horizontal or oblique asymptotes (end behaviours of the function).
● Determine the end behaviour on both sides of each asymptote.
● Determine any x- and/or y-intercepts.
● If necessary, find a few extra coordinates to paint the complete picture.

Notes 3.4 - Determining the Rational Functions
Use your knowledge of asymptotic and discontinuous behaviour to determine the equation of the functions
below.
𝑎𝑥−5
1.) Find the equation of a function in the form 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑏𝑥+𝑐
with a vertical asymptote at 𝑥 = 4, a horizontal
5
asymptote at 𝑦 = 2 and an x-intercept of ( 4 , 0).

2.) Determine the equation of a function that has a hole at x = 2, a vertical asympote at 𝑥 =− 5, a
1 2
horizontal asymptote of 𝑦 = 2
and a zero at 𝑥 = 3
.

3.) Determine the equation of the function shown below.

Notes 3.6 - Solving Rational Equation Word Problems
1.) When they work together, Stuart and Lucy can deliver flyers to all the homes in their neighbourhood in 42
minutes. When Lucy works alone, she can finish the deliveries in 13 minutes less time than Stuart can when
he works alone. How long does it take Stuart to deliver the flyers?

2.) Tim, an open water swimmer, is training for the Olympics. To do so, he swims in water that has a current of
3 m/h. Time finds that he can swim 4 miles against the current in the same amount of time he can swim 10
miles with the current. How fast can Tim swim with no current?

b. Why can there not be a tangent line where x = -3?

2. The snowshoe hare population in a newly created conservation area can be predicted over time by the model

conservation area. Determine when the hare population will increase most rapidly, and estimate the instantaneous
rate of change in population at this time.
