6 Arithmetic Sequences Day 2

An Arithmetic Sequence is an ordered list of numbers
that has a common difference between each consecutive
terms. What do you do if you are not given consecutive
values in the sequence? n an
Ex: 1 15 Let’s do this
4 27 problem
9 47 two ways!
As a Pattern Problem:
n an Notice that there will be three additions
0 between 15 and 27, so if you take the
1 15 +? difference and divide it by 3 you will get the
2 ? +? common difference. 27 – 15 = 12 ÷ 3 = 4
3 ? Now that you know the common difference
+?
4 27 is 4 you can subtract 4 from 15 to find the
5 y-intercept, and write the function.
6
7 an = 4n + 11
8 Check your equation with the third point. If you plug in
9 47 9, you do get 47 so you know your equation is correct!

Algebraic Method: Knowing that arithmetic sequences are

linear you can take two of the points given and write the equation
of the line using the slope and then point-slope formula.
y  y1  m( x  x1 )
27  15 12 y  15  4  x  1
m  4
4 1 3 y  15  4 x  4
y  4 x  11  an  4n  11
Practice Problems.
Write a function that represents the arithmetic sequences.
1. Juan saves $12 the first week of the year. He plans to increase
his savings by $4 each week. If Juan’s goal is to save $68, how
many weeks will it take him to accomplish that?

2. Brandon collects coins. His father gave him 20 coins to start

his collection on his 11th birthday. Each year he adds about 12
coins to his collection. How many coins will he have in his
collection in 40 years?

3. Each row in a theater has 8 more seats than the previous row.
If the first row has 14 seats, which row has 446 seats?

4. Sophie is stacking boxes of tissue for a store display. Each row

of tissues has 2 fewer boxes than the row below. The first row
has 23 boxes of tissues. How many boxes will there be in the
tenth row?

5. Examine the pattern of the cubes:

1 2 3 4
Function for Cubes? How many cubes in pattern 43?
Key:
1. an = 4n + 8;
It will take him 15 weeks to save $68.
2. an = 12n + 20;
It will take him 40 weeks to collect 500 coins.
3. an = 8n + 6;
Row 55 has 446 seats.
4. an = –2n + 25;
The tenth row will have 5 boxes.
5. an = 2n – 1;
Pattern 43 will have 85 cubes.
