across the global by the institutions of education. Since the inception there have been
improvements in delivery and interactions between the learners and the tutors;
however, each participant has been undertaking distinctive roles to ensure that the
concept becomes a success. Several studies have been carried out to ascertain
perceptions of online learning on both the learners and tutors, towards online education
across the globe. In this essay, the focus will delve in the roles of the students
undertaking online courses and, also suggest ways in which students can co-create
active learning environment.
Online discussions in terms of community forums benefits online students and should
always be incorporated in the studies. Students can organize themselves in sizeable
groups according to the modules they are undertaking at the University. Such groups
will help in closer interactions and participation amongst them as well as enhance
understanding of the course contents by posting questions and positive response
regarding the subject matter at hand. Moreover, while interacting in group forums,
students will experience a sense of belonging and engagement. Roper (2007, p.63)
stated that ‘’participation in threaded discussions helped 52.6 percent benefit most from
the interaction with their classmates, while reading the responses of others helped 15.8
percent.’’ The same idea is being emphasized in a separate study, however, with
specification of smaller groups (Sabine, Renee and Ten (2017, p.241).
According to Roper (2007, p.63) most students studying online applied different
strategies to retain the course content through the concept called ‘use it or lose it’,
whereby, they could apply the learned knowledge at their work places by interacting
with colleagues in relevance to the content, practicing concepts in their own language
and, also applying the concepts in their current and past experiences.
Self-motivation is also an essential attribute that any online student needs to practice
throughout their programme. This will keep them going and enable them to succeed in
their programme. Roper (2007, p.64) stated that
Each individual may find something different that works for him or her in
studying motivated. One student promised to buy himself a new truck if he
completed the degree. With greater work done independently in online
courses, a new online student would be well advised to consider
developing personal techniques for staying engaged, especially by
creating a self-motivation plan.
Without self-motivation students can be disengage themselves which can lead to poor
performance and student attrition.
On co-creation, online students should acknowledge working together for the common
course during their programme. ‘’ Learners need to understand group processes and
effectively play individual roles in group learning. Thus, in online environment, learners
should show presence and trust to the community, initiate dialogue, and mediate
communication if required…Learners may have roles such as editor, summarizer, task
leader, group discussion leader, mentor, expert, moderator, peer reviewer’’ (Vanderwell
and Savery, 2004, p.41).
In conclusion, the essay has highlighted various roles and responsibilities of students
studying on line courses and, also various mechanisms that they can collaborate during
their course programme. From the various sources consulted, there is a general
consensus that indeed for successful realization of the online study programmes, each
stakeholder must play their roles actively. Of important areas to summarize on are;
effective time management strategy which came out as the key challenges in online
programme, online group discussions or community forums; which aid in meaningful
interaction amongst the students and, finally self-motivation; which is the most driving
factor to boost the student’s morale and give them reason to proceed with the pursuit of
their programme.
