CHAPTER 2: Generation & Measurement of High Voltages & Currents

(B) Generation of HVAC

(B.3) High Frequency (HFHVAC): Tesla Coil

It is used for:
1) Generation of
HVDC;
1
V and V 
f
2) Testing: as

CHAPTER 2: Generation & Measurement of High Voltages & Currents

(7) Calculate the supply voltage

for Tesla coils which are used to
test a single core cable. The
following data are given:
The core diameter is 2.5 cm
The sheath diameter is 5 cm
The inductance of the coils are
0.2 and 0.3 H
The used capacitor is 0.1 µF
Circuit efficiency = 88 %
Cable length = 200 m
Test voltage = 50 kV
r of the cable material = 2.5

(C) Generation of Impulse Voltages

Double exponential impulses:

V (t) = V o [ exp ( t / R 2 C 1 ) – exp (  t / R 1 C 2 ) ]

CHAPTER 2: Generation & Measurement of High Voltages & Currents

(C) Generation of Impulse Voltages

tf (measured) = 1.67 (t 90% - t30% )

tf (measured) = 1.25 (t90% - t10% )

Not commonly used Fast-front

In industry

Slow-front Low efficiency

Circuits in Figs. (b) and (c) are the most commonly used in industry, where Figs. (b)
and (c) are for fast- and slow-front circuits, respectively.
Circuit in Fig. (d) has low efficiency.
The advantages are: (1) tf and tt are independently controlled by changing either R1 or
R2 separately, and (2) Cload is part of C2. 9

(9) An impulse voltage generator has

8 stages, each stage having generator
capacitors rated 0.16mF and 120kV.
The load capacitance is 1 nF.
(a) Find the values of the per-stage
wave-shaping resistors needed to
generate a 1.2/50ms lightning
impulse wave.
(b) What is the maximum output
voltage of the generator if the
charging voltage is 120kV?
(c) What is the energy rating of the
generator?

(10) An impulse voltage generator

has 12 stages, each stage having a
capacitance of 0.125 mF, front and
tail resistances of 70  and 400 ,
respectively. If the load capacitance
is 1000 pF, find the front and tail
