Tutorial Sheet-4

1. Find all the local maxima, local minima, and saddle points of the
function f ( x , y )=x 3 +3 x y 2−15 x + y 3−15 y .

2. Find the critical points of the function f ( x , y )=ⅇ x (x 2− y 2 ). Using the second
derivative test, classify the critical points as saddle point, point of local
maximum and point of local minimum.

3. Find the parametric equations for the tangent line to the curve of
intersection of the cone z=√ x 2+ y 2 and the plane x + y + z=20 at the point
( 12 ,5 , 0 ).

4. Estimating the change of multivariable function,

a. Let f ( x , y , z )=e x cos yz , How much f ( x , y , z ) would change as the point
P(x , y , z) moves from the origin a distance of ds=0.1 unit in the direction
of (2 i+ 2 j−2 k )?
b. Let g ( x , y , z ) =x+ x cos z− y sin z + y , how much g ( x , y , z ) would change if
the point P(x , y , z) moves from P0 (2 ,−1, 0) a distance of ds=0.2 unit
toward the point P1=(0 , 1, 2).

error E in the approximation over the region R : |x−1|≤ 0.01 ,
| y −1|≤ 0.01 ,|z−2|≤ 0.08.

6. (a) Find an equation for the tangent x 2− y=1 at (√ 2 ,1).

(b) Find an equation for the tangent x 2−xy + y 2=7 at (−1 , 2).
7. The Celsius temperature in a region in space is given by
T ( x , y , z)=2 x −xyz . A particle is moving in this region and its position at

time t seconds is given by x=2 t 2 , y=3 t , z=−t 2, where distance is measured

in meters.
a. How fast is the temperature experienced by the particle changing in
degrees Celsius per meter when the particle is at P ( 8 , 6 ,−4 ) ?
b. How fast is the temperature experienced by the particle changing in
degrees Celsius per second at P?

8. In Exercises find
(i) the directions in which the functions increase and decrease most
rapidly at P0 (ii) the derivatives of the functions in the above (i)
directions.
