Data Visualization Project

Part II. Final Product

Due Date: 11:59 pm on Oct. 11th, 2024

Please provide a six-page narrative that explores your question and shares a story that will

benefit your audience.

Your product will:

• Provide clear question(s).

• Tell us your motivation for the topic.

• Define key variables including how they are measured.

• Tell a clear story.

• Have visuals and data that support the story.

• Provide documentation about the source of the data set(s).

• Discuss limitations of data set(s).

• Demonstrate understanding of concepts covered in this course.

• Make effective comparisons.

• Demonstrate that time was spent exploring your data sets, designing your visual

displays, and crafting your story.

Please include the following sections (note: figures, charts, and reference list do not count

toward page count).

1. Introduction and background. Discuss your motivation for picking your topic. Please

include any sources that inspired you. Give context and relevance. What do you want to

learn and accomplish? What questions do you want to answer? How will your project

benefit others?

2. Datasets. Describe the datasets that you are using (need at least two datasets). For each

dataset include:

1
• Who collected the data? Who funded the project that the data came from? Other

important information?

• Why was the data created and for what purpose? Who collected the data? Who

funded the project that the data came from?

• What is the timeline or lineage of the data?

• Define and describe the variables included in the dataset.

• How large is the dataset (cases, how many and what are the variables)?

• What locations are included in the dataset?

• Describe how the datasets will help you achieve your goals/questions that posed

in your introduction, including any limitations.

3. Data Story. The exercises and examples shown in in our readings can help you craft

your data story.

• Create at least six charts in Tableau. Please include at least one map, at least one bar,

at least one table, at least one line chart.

• For each chart:

o Tell the reader which data set (if using more than one) each variable comes from,

the units (or categories) of the variable, and any other additional information.

Please explore and reference accompanying documentation! Are there any

limitations in the data set? Are there any definitions to share?

o As mentioned above, make sure that your variables are clearly defined.

o Please paste these graphs in your document at appropriate points in your

narrative.

o Demonstrate how the chart addresses your question/goal.

• Create a Tableau dashboard that includes at least three charts and at least two

interactive features.

• Compose narrative that describes your charts and tells your audience a story that

meets your goals stated in the introduction. Please apply the concepts and principles

that we have covered in this course (see above guidelines at the beginning of this

document.

link] for description of credible sources.

6. Contributions (if team project). As you read research papers, you may notice that

author contributions are listed. Please list team names and the contribution of each team

member. Note: Team members that do not adequately contribute will not receive credit

for team assignments.

Please submit and share your Tableau workbooks in the packaged format: twbx. Make sure

all data sets and all charts are included (or in Tableau Online if using).

Class Presentation. Create Story Points in Tableau presenting your story. Present story to your

classmates during final week of class. If in virtual environment, use appropriate video sharing.

Suggest requiring students to create a minimum of four story points and give a 6-8 minute
