Khulna University of Engineering & Technology

Department of Building Engineering and Construction Management

B. Sc. Engineering 3rd Year 2nd Term Regular Examination, 2020
CE 3211
(Structural Analysis and Design-II)

Full Marks: 120 Time: 1.5 hrs

N.B. i) Answer any two questions from each section in separate script.
ii) Figures in the right margin indicate full marks
iii) Assume reasonable values for any missing data.

Section – A

1. Analyze the frame of the following figure by moment distribution method. Find all (30)
reaction components. Draw the moment diagram, and sketch the deflected structure.

2. For the plane truss in the following figure, determine the nodal coordinate matrix, (30)
member connectivity matrix, combined load matrix, member stiffness matrix and
global stiffness matrix. Assume 𝐴𝐸 = 432000 for all members.

3. Consider a uniform two-span beam ABC which is fully-fixed at supports A and C and (30)
simply supported at B as indicated in the following figure. A uniformly distributed load
of 24 kN/m is applied to span AB and a central point load of 24kN is applied to span
BC as shown. Using the data given, the degrees-of-freedom indicated and assuming
both members to be axially rigid,
(i) Generate the structural stiffness matrix and the applied load vector.
(ii) Determine the structural displacements.
(iii) Determine the member end forces and the support reactions.
(iv) Sketch the shear force and bending moment diagrams.
(v) Sketch the deflected shape.

Section – B

4. (a) Draw the influence lines for reactions at A, B, C and D and shear and bending (20)
moment at point E of the beam shown in the following figure.

(b) For the plane frame of the following figure, draw qualitative shape of influence lines (10)
for beam end moment MBC and support horizontal reaction CX.

5. (a) What is folded plate structure? Describe the advantages and disadvantages of folded (10)
plate roofs over shell roofs.
(b) Analyze the symmetrical V-shaped folded plate roof shown in figure and find the (20)
stresses in the folded plate shell. Given that,
 Span of the folded plate = 30 m.
 Thickness of the plate = 125 mm.
 Live load = 0.80 kN/m2

6. (a) Describe briefly the following terms those are correlate with dynamic seismic (10)
response analysis of structure:
(i) P-Δ effect, (ii) Damping, (iii) Story drift, (iv) Inelastic response spectrum,
(v) Natural period and frequency.
(b) Determine the drifts, story shears, and total base shear for the structure shown in (20)
figure. Assume the spectral displacement and acceleration are 4 (arbitrary units) and
0.28 g (108 in/sec2), respectively. Assume consistent units are used.
