AMS 2300 mode switch

Hi All,
I have a surplus AMS 2300 which I am trying to place back into service. It will serve as staging
disk for a new tape backup system.
This system was running when it was decommissioned, but all of its disks were used to increase
capacity on another AMS 2300. I have populated the base unit (DF800-RK2) with disks and
fired it up. It boots as far as "00106020 Boot executing[FLASH]", and it errors out with the
following message from Controller 0 "09/22/2015 15:05:21 00 RB8400 Download failed".
I believe this is because it is missing its config since these are not the disks that were in it
before. I don't want to recover the configuration, I want to start over. Do I want to do a "Factory
reset" or an "initial install" or what? There is a mode switch next to the power switch, but no
documentation on how to set it. It is currently set to 0 which is normal mode. I know there is a
maintenance mode, and I know that from there you can do a factory reset. I do not know the
procedure. Can anyone help me out?
Thanks
- Eric

Not only are you missing the config but you are also missing the microcode, this would normally
be duplicated across the first 5 drives in the machine. The machine can still be recovered but
you'll need a copy of a microcode disc and snm2 disc and ideally a virgin install os to work from
as you'll need to put the machine in maintenance mode to perform an initial microcode
installation and this requires a specific java setup. On the SNM2 disc you'll find java policy files
and location instructions in a file called Setup_File.zip, there is also an executable in a folder
called Initial Setup and you'll need to find a copy of jre1.6. The exe will create a folder structure
on the drive root, it'll be something like c:\microprogram\diskarray-microprogram\. Extract the
microcode into here, you'll need to point to this directory from the web interface.
Boot array, let it fail then press both the maintenance buttons on the back of the controller within
10 second of each other and log back in to the web interface where you'll be challeged with a
username and password prompt. See this doc for help and instructions on accessing the
machines maintenance mode: HDS AMS2000培训-03_TCI1835_WebTool_图文_百度文库
To be honest this won't be easy, this interface isn't intended for the end user and is very
particular. For that reason the task is usually performed by an experiance HDS engineer. You'd
also need to set the machines serial number and locate the arrays license keys if you don't have
these handy as they were part of the configuration.

Also, you don't need to touch the rotary dial on the front. Apart from a couple undocumented
functions, it's mostly just for UPS configuration.

Thank you for your help. I am able to get into maintenance mode, so that is progress.
When I boot in normal mode, the top frame in the browser says:

Serial No :85042394Array ID :85042394CTL 0Ver :08B5/A-Y

It knows its Serial Number and Firmware Version. Are Firmware and MicroCode synonymous?
I found and downloaded a file called Firmware_Acer_08B5_A_A.zip, but this looks to me like it
would be 08B5/A-A, rather than the correct 08B5/A-Y. Is my assumption correct?
I have another running AMS2300 with the same firmware. Can I get the microcode from that?

Yes, microcode and firmware are essentially the same, but i wouldn't trust that package you have
downloaded. Ams2000's all have code ending in either s m h x y z and nothing else. This
identifies the either version 1 or version 2 hardware and whether it is ams2100, ams2300 or
ams2500. If that code is for an hds product it's possible that it's for the sms100. Ams2000
firmware is usually either in a zip or iso if you don't have a cd. It should be about 200MB if it
contains all varieties identified above.
Downloading code from another machine is also impossible, all tools are designed to push only
for this hardware.
Do you have access to the hds portal?

If I borrow one of the first five drives from my running unit and boot this unit with that drive
installed, will it find the microcode and replicate it to the other four drives?
I don't currently have access to the portal. All of our HDS equipment is out of maintenance at
this point. I have not yet located the original CDs/DVDs, we recently moved to a new
datacenter.

Hi Kevin,
Thank you for your help. I did locate the original DVDs that came with the unit, so I was able
get that unit up and running thanks to the information you provided. I did run into a few
problems along the way.
First, the MicroCode disk for the AMS2300 did not contain the Micro_setup folder. I found that
on the MicroCode for an AMS200 we have. I ran the setup program in that folder and it created
the folder C:\diskarray-microprogram\microprogram and placed the AMS200 microcode,
20090213-01_V82, in there. So I took the AMS2300 microcode, 20100830-01_V93E_DF800,
and placed it in there as well. So far so good.
The AMS200 code came with Java 1.3, and of course that didn't work so I installed Java
1.6. Then it was missing the HTTPClient.jar, so I found that and copied it into the java 1.6 lib
folder to solve that problem. The browse button would not work, and I was not able to paste the
path into the web form field, but I was able to type the full path into the field and successfully do
an initial code install. WooHoo! I have since located the java.policy file that would have fixed
the browser button issue.
I do have one more question though. How do I set the serial number?
Thanks,
- Eric

Hi Eric, sorry I've been offline so long. I told you it would be tricky!
the next bit is easy enough now that you've got this far. Go to http://<IP address of the
array>/equip_set , while in maintenance mode.
