COLLEGE OF AGICULTURE, ENGINEERING AND SCIENCE

B.ENG ELECTRICAL/ELECTRONIC ENGINEERING PROGRAMME

COURSE CODE: EEE 405 Time Allowed: One Hour

COURSE TITLE: Electrical Power Principles
CREDIT UNITS: 3 Credits
Instruction: Answer All Questions

Q1 i) Differentiate between cylindrical rotor and salient pole synchronous machines.

(4 Marks)
ii) State the four electrical parameters of a transmission line (2 Marks)
iii) Draw the pi equivalent circuit representation of short and medium transmission lines
and identify the electrical parameters involved (6 Marks)

(i) The cylindrical rotor synchronous generators are usually driven by steam turbines
and mostly used in very high speed applications such as turbo alternators while the
salient pole machine are used low speed operations
The rotor of cylindrical rotor is cylindrical and small while that of salient pole is
large
The rotor poles of salient pole are projecting out from the surface of the rotor

(ii) Series Resistance R and inductance L, shunt capacitance C and conductance G

(iii)

Q2 The following loads are connected to an industrial plant:

(i) 100kVA lighting load at unity power factor
(ii) 500-hp induction motor at 0.8 lagging power factor
(iii) 150-hp synchronous motor at 0.75 leading power factor, and
Determine the total load and its power factor.
Note that 1ph = 745.7 W or 746 W

Q3 A thermal station has the following data: Max. power demand = 25,000 kW, Load factor = 40%,
Boiler efficiency = 85% Turbine efficiency = 90% , Coal consumption = 0·85 kg/kWh and Cost of 1
ton of coal = N2,500.
(i) Determine the thermal efficiency. (2 Marks)
(ii) If 1 ton of coal will generate 1000 kWh of energy, determine coal bill per annum.
(3 Marks)

(i) Thermal efficiency = ηboiler × ηturbine = 0·85 × ·9 = 0·765 or 76·5 %

(ii) Units generated/annum = Max. demand × L.F. × Hours in a year = 25,000 x 0.4 x 8760 =
8760 × 104 kWh
Coal consumption/annum ={0.85 x (8760 × 104)}/1000 = 74460 tons
Annual coal bill = N2500 × 74460 =M N 186.15

Q4 A 65-km 33-kV 50-Hz three-phase transmission line has a series impedance z = 0.08 + j
0.50 Ω/km and negligible admittance. Determine the ABCD parameters of the line.
