What are my goals for taking this course? What do I want to get out of it? What are areas of
growth for myself as a leader?
I hope to become the best version of myself as a leader. I also hope to be able to inspire and push
others to be the best version of themselves. To do this, I think I need to learn creative ways to
point people in the right direction without being bossy, or sound condescending. I need to learn
ways to bring myself down to their level (vulnerable) after they have put themselves in that
position.
I also think I need to learn to be more empathetic towards others. I need to learn ways to step out
of my comfort zone, and be vulnerable in front of others to show them they aren’t alone. I need
to learn how to put myself in their position to fully understand the situation. I’ve always been
caring on the surface, but deep down I don’t believe I fully go out of my way to make sure the
outcome of the situation will be positive/beneficial for EVERYONE, which is something I would
love to work on. I often choose the option that is easiest to accomplish and benefits the most. An
example of a time when this happened is [insert scenario here]. I need to learn when this is
appropriate and when it is not.
I also need to become less of a perfectionist. A lot of the time I am so obsessed with the little
details, that I begin to get overwhelmed with the big picture. I overthink every small thing, and it
begins to have a big emotional toll on me. An example of a time when this happened is [insert
scenario here].
On a different note, I need to make sure I’m taking care of myself. Often I am so worried about
managing all of my responsibilities that I don’t set aside time to be me or to hang out with
family. This also has a large emotional effect on me, and inhibits my strong and positive
qualities.
All of the things listed above are my weak spots, things that I need to dig deep on, and find the
root of the problem, as I wish to solve these personal issues throughout the duration of the
course. After I solve these problems, I can better my leadership and support and lead my
community in a more effective way.

What are my goals for taking this course? What do I want to get out of it? What are areas of
growth for myself as a leader?
My biggest goals for taking this course are to become more confident in who I am and in
speaking in front of a group of people I am not necessarily comfortable with. For me, I believe
that becoming more confident in myself will lead to my other goal. I am already seeing changes
in myself just from being in an environment where I am pushed to explore my identity. For me
speaking in front of people I don’t know or am not comfortable with can be stressful and I hope
to become more comfortable talking in front of people. I see leaders as people who encourage
others to find themselves and help to inspire change in the world. I would like for this course to
help me learn how to become this ideal leader or change my perspective on what leadership
really is. I know that this course is designed to help shape us and educate us on how to be a good
leader and I hope that I am able to take the information I am given and expand on it. One of my
biggest areas of growth, aside from what I have already mentioned, would be taking the
information I am given and using it to change something. This might be an issue about there not
being any toilet paper or someone needing help. I find that it is often hard to find who to go to
for help or advice. This is definitely an area that I need to work on that I believe our projects will
encourage me to think about. What I have learned about myself that I found most surprising, just
from deciding to take this class, is that I can be confident in my own decisions and I can make
my own decisions shaping and revolving around my future.

This is my first time taking a formal leadership training and I’m feeling both nervous and
excited. I’m not sure if I want to have a specific leadership role while I’m at Emma, but I know
that these kinds of skills are really important in all aspects of my life. I want to be able to build
my confidence more than anything. An area that I think I will learn a lot is in community
building. I think community is important, but my assumption right now is that community
building is something done by extroverts and people comfortable getting up in front of a crowd,
but that is not me right now
