Finding Phonics
Finding Phonics
• Covers double letter endings, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘th’ and adjacent consonants.
Practical points
1. When identifying the words in the passages, it is useful and motivating to use highlighters. A different colour
can be used for each sound. Alternatively, coloured felt tips can be used to circle the words.
2. Colour coding the word searches in the same way will add meaning and interest to the task. Circling the letters
remaining in a bright colour can make finding the hidden word easier.
3. Pages 37 to 39 can be used to check that the children can reproduce and remember the grapheme-phoneme
correspondences taught. They are given a free choice of words they can write. This can tell where more
practice is needed. Repeating this task on another day can monitor retention.
4. Page 40 is used to monitor progress. It will also improve fluency. The children are asked to read the words.
Accuracy of reading can be recorded, with dates, in the boxes at the bottom of the page. A time target is also
given. Most children enjoy the challenge of reading against a stopwatch and beating the target time. This
can be recorded below and their own time can then be the new target. If a child is quick and accurate at least
three times, he/she is ready to move on, but the sheet can be revisited at a later date to ensure recall. If a child
becomes upset when being timed, as a few do, it is better to omit timing. The sheet can be used to record
results for individual children or to monitor a group.
5. If at all possible, each child should read the passages and the words found in the word search aloud to the
group or an adult.
• Phonics Again Series: Book 1 covers CVC words; -ll, -ss, -ff, -ck and -ng endings; sh, ch and th; long vowels
ai, ee, igh, oa and oo. Book 2 covers the long vowel phonemes with r and adjacent consonants. Both books
have a similar format to this book. Little ‘non-phonic’ writing is required and the clear, easy format enables
independent working.
• Big Phonics Books Series: a big bank of A4 worksheets to complement any synthetic phonics programme:
designed for children who need extra support and a small steps approach. These five big books (around 100
pages each) provide a range of tasks to aid personalised learning, with plenty of practice at each stage. The
clear layout and instructions are well-suited to independent working and are ideal for homework.
• Puzzle it Out offers a variety of motivating word puzzles and games. The three books together cover most
of the phonic work recommended in ‘Letters and Sounds’. The books appeal to a wide age range, from the
very young to older pupils who are still having problems with phonics. They can be used alongside any phonic
programme. Many activities are ideal for collaborative work in pairs or groups, as advocated in ‘Letters and
Sounds’. Little teacher intervention is required and many sheets have a ‘grown up’ feel.

king bang
The king came. Bells rang for a long time. They went ding dong.
Boys and girls sang a song for him. Flags hung along the way.
There was a bang as a gun was set off. It was a good day.

frog glass
Fred and Glen were glum. It was frosty and they were in the
house. Then there was a glint of sun so Mum said to go out.
It felt very fresh. The pond was like glass and they had to
stay away from it. They were glad to go back in. Mum made
them a hot drink with froth on top.
