MEL7140 Mechanical Vibrations Quiz-I August 30, 2024

Maximum Marks: 10 Duration 50 Minutes

 All questions are compulsory. Answer all parts of the question in one place. Segregated
parts will not be evaluated. No question/doubt/query will be answered during the exam.
Use your judgement in case of any doubt and state clearly the assumptions made, if any.
 Write your name and roll number clearly on the answer sheet.

1. The natural frequency of a spring-mass system on earth is 5 rad/sec. The natural frequency of this system on
the moon (gmoon=gearth/6) is -------. [0.5 Mark]
2. For a single degree of freedom viscous damped system, the force transmissibility is less than 1 if frequency
ratio is greater than -------. [0.5 Mark]
3. Derive the differential equation governing the free vibration of the system shown in Figure. 1. Also determine
the natural frequency (rad/sec). [2 Marks]
4. A projectile of mass m = 10 kg travelling with the velocity of 50 m/s strikes and becomes embedded in a
massless board supported by a spring of stiffness k = 6.4 N/m in parallel with a dashpot with the coefficient
of viscous damping c = 400 Ns/m (see Figure 2). Determine the time required for the board to reach the
maximum displacement and the value of maximum displacement. [4 Marks]
5. A free vibrations test is run to determine the stiffness and damping properties of an elastic element. A 20-kg
block is attached to the element. The block is displaced 0.5cm and released. The resulting oscillations are
monitored with the results shown in Figure 3. Determine stiffness k and damping coefficient c for this
element. [3 Marks]
