is tossed three times. Find the probability of
(a) obtaining all heads;
(b) obtaining at least one tail. [ no calculator ]

2. The probability distribution of the discrete random variable X is given by the

following table. [ calculator allowed ]

x 1 2 3 4 5
P ( X = x) 0.3 0.08 k 0.15 .25

(a) Find the value of k.

(b) Calculate the expected value of X.

3. (a) In a group of 10 people the expected number who wear glasses is 2 and the
variance is 1.6. Find the probability that
(i) a person chosen at random from the group wears glasses;
(ii) exactly 6 people in the group wear glasses. [ calculator allowed ]
(b) In a different group of 10 people where the probability of a randomly chosen
person is wearing glasses is higher than in part (a), the probability that exactly
six people wear glasses is 0.219. Find the probability that a person chosen at
random from the group of 10 wears glasses. [ calculator allowed ]
