Void Ratio

1. Definition of Void Ratio:-
Void ratio is a fundamental parameter in soil mechanics, representing the ratio of the volume of voids to the
volume of solids in soil. It is denoted by (e) and calculated using the formula:
e = Vv/Vs
where:
 Vv: Volume of voids.
 Vs: Volume of solids.
2.Importance of Void Ratio
Void ratio is important in soil mechanics, geotechnical engineering, and civil engineering as it influences
many properties of soil as:

Compressibility: Higher void ratios means more compressible soil, which can affect the stability of
structures built on it.
Permeability: The void ratio directly affects the soil's ability to allow water flow; higher voids mean higher
permeability.
Shear Strength: Void ratio impacts the cohesion and shear strength of soil; as void ratio increases, the soil
becomes weaker and less cohesive.
3.Factors Affecting Void Ratio
Soil Type: Different soil types have different void ratios; for example, sandy soils usually have lower void
ratios
compared to clay soils.
Density: The compaction level or density of the soil affects the void ratio; well-compacted soil will have a
lower void ratio.
Applied Pressure: Continuous or heavy pressure on the soil can reduce the void ratio.
Experiment to calculate Void Ratio:-
1. Get a sample of soil,container (small metal box) and a portable balance.
2. Measure
the weight of the container = 21gm
3. Measure the weight of container + soil in it = 118gm
4. As the sample is dry→no need to use oven
5. Measure the volume of the container(which is equal to the total volume{Vt})
The container is a Copper cylindrical box with(height=3.5cm),(diameter=4.5cm)
Volume(Vt )=π r 2h→π*2.252*3.5=55.66 cm3
6. As the Wa=0 and the Ww=0 because the sample is dry ,so the Wt=Ws
Weight(Ws)=118-21=97gm
7. As : GS=2.67gm/cm3 , Ws=97gm and GS=Ws/Vs*γw
Vs=97/2.67*1=36.32cm3
8. As : Vt=55.66 cm3 , Vs=36.32cm3

Vv=55.66-36.32=19.34cm3
9. So : e=Vv/Vs → e=19.34/36.32=0.52

Measure the weight of the container only Measure the weight of the container+soil
In case the sample wasn’t dry,use oven

Measure the height of the cylindrical container Measure the

diameter of the cylindrical container
