1.Based on your critical analysis of the above description of Antonio de Morga about the early
inhabitants of the then called Philippine islands, draw some points which you do not agree about
the Filipino people before the Spanish colonization. Provide evidence of your argument.
Answer: I disagree in the fact that the Filipino people had attacked other tribes and settlements,
killed people, and committed so many other wrongdoings before the time when the Spanish
colonization came. Though this is always done through legal or illegal ways, depending upon the
opportunity and necessity, one cannot prevent them from committing such actions. It was also
quite normal to marry off young girls to these men and pay them to get these girls into bed
because it was believed that it brought bad luck and bad manners if the ladies were virgins when
they were given in marriage.
2. Do you think some of the observed characteristics of culture and practices of the Early
Filipinos still exist nowadays? Give examples, if there is. Justify if there is None.
Answer: Yes, I think that some of the present characteristics of culture and early Filipino
practices remain till the present day. For all the influencing of colonization, globalization, and
modernization that go about affecting Filipinos daily, many of them still advance and uphold
their rich cultural heritage.
• Respect for Elders: In the traditional Filipino setting, elderly people were very much respected
because of their wisdom, experience, and leadership. Up to today, the elder people play a big role
in family matters. Because of this, many family members still seek their wisdom in order to have
the right direction.
• Strong Family Ties: Traditionally, family and kinship ties have been very important to
Filipinos. This is shown in modern culture in which the needs of a family will always be put first,
rather than the interest of the person.
• Fest and fiesta: The early Filipinos loved festivals and celebrations. With the accompaniment of
some music, some dancing, and food feasting, as often as the calendar could accommodate, the
culture can be said to continue up to today because city fiestas all over the country are always
going on throughout the year.
Here are just a few examples of how some of the observed characteristics of culture and practices
that the early Filipinos have developed are still there today. Despite how much modernization
and globalization there is, the Filipino people still find ways to hold their rich cultural heritage to
this day.
