Assessment

1.Based on your critical analysis of the above description of Antonio de

Morga about the early inhabitants of the then called Philippine islands, draw
some points which you do not agree about the Filipino people before the
Spanish Colonization. Provide evidence of your argument.

Answer:

Morga frequently expressed prevalent European thought, which regards non-

European countries . This can be seen in his accounts of Filipino customs
and behaviors, as he frequently passed judgment through the lens of
European cultural norms.

Evidence of complex social structures: Pre-colonial Filipinos had established

systems of governance, often based on kinship and community ties. These
systems varied across different regions, with some having centralized
leadership while others relied on councils of elders.

2.Do you think some of the observed characteristics of culture and practices
of the early Filipinos still exist nowadays? Give examples, if there is. Justify if
there is none.

Answer:

Various cultural traditions and ideals prevalent among pre-colonial Filipinos

continue to exist and can be recognized in contemporary Filipino culture. This
is only one example of how tenacious Filipino culture is in terms of adjusting
and changing with the seasons.

Example:Family-Oriented Society: The Importance of “Kapamilya” The strong

emphasis on family ties and extended kinship networks, known as
“kapamilya” (family member), remains a cornerstone of Filipino culture.
Family gatherings and celebrations are central to Filipino life, where
extended family members come together to honor and support one another.
This tradition reflects the importance of community and shared experiences,
which were deeply ingrained in pre-colonial Filipino society.
