LEARNING AREA : Mathematics

SYLLABUS TOPIC : Relationships

SYLLABUS SUB-TOPIC : Data Handling

CALA TITLE : Graphs

CALA TYPE : Pen & Paper

LEVEL : Grade 7

DURATION : 2 Weeks

BACKGROUND

It has been observed that quite a number of people, including learners cannot represent
data on graphs

COMPETENCES AND SKILLS:

 Data collection
 Researching
 Problem solving
 Critical thinking

CONCEPT/SKILLS

 Naming different types of graphs

 Identifying at least 5 types of trees found in the local community
 Counting the number of each type of tree identified and presenting the information
on a table
 Drawing of graphs using data recorded on the table
 Solving problems using information from a pie chart

OBJECTIVES

Learners should be able to:

 Name different types of graphs which can be used to present data

 Identify 5 types of trees found in the local community
 Count the number of of each type of tree identified and present the information on
a table
 Draw a graph using data recorded on the table
 Solve problems using information from a Pie Chart
CALA CONTEXT

Learners will:

 Name 5 types of graphs which can be used to present data

 Identify 5 types of trees found in the local community
 Count the number of each type of tree identified and present the information on a
table
 Draw a Column Graph
 Use information on the pie chart to answer given questions

Learners will be equipped with research skills as they acquire knowledge on different types
of graphs which can be used to present data. Their technology skills will be enriched as they
will be using different ICT tools to download information

FACILITATOR'S NOTES

 Facilitator gets consent from the school head and parents, for learners to carry out
their research.
 Facilitator should advise learners to use various ICT tools during research

LEARNER'S CALA GUIDE
LEARNING AREA : MATHEMATICS
LEVEL : Grade 7
CALA TYPE : PEN AND PAPER
SYLLABUS TOPIC : RELATIONSHIPS
SUB-TOPIC : DATA HANDLING
CALA TITLE : GRAPHS

BACKGROUND

It has been observed that quite a number of people, including learners cannot represent
data on graphs. To show understanding of data representation, you will collect data on the
number of each of the five types of trees identified in the local community. The data must
be recorded on a table then represented on a Column Graph.

CALA TIPS

Part A

 Name types of graphs which can be used to present data

 Identify 5 types of trees found in the local community
 Record the data on a table
 Draw a Column Graph using data recorded on the table, then answer questions
about the graph
 Which is the most common tree found in the area?
 Find the total number of trees which were counted.
 What percentage of trees are gumtrees?

 Study the Pie Chart and answer the questions that follow. The pie chart shows the
games played by learners in a class. There are 48 children in the class.
 What fraction plays volleyball?
 Which is the most popular game played by learners?
 How many children play tennis?
 One quarter of the soccer players are girls. How many girls play soccer
 What decimal fraction plays netball?

Part B

 Download articles on use of graphs, types of graphs and data representation

HOW YOU WILL BE ASSESSED

Part A

 Name at least 5 types of graphs which can be used to present data

 Identify 5 types of trees found in the local community
 Record collected data, on the table
 You will be awarded marks for correctly drawing a Column Graph and responding to
questions about the graph
 Marks will be awarded for correct responses to questions about the Pie Chart

Part B

 You will earn marks for downloading articles on different types of graphs and use of
graphs
