Purpose
The increasing ownership of pets in our society and the care provided to street dogs and cats
("strays") is heartening. Pets enhance overall wellbeing and happiness, especially for children. At
the same time, it is noted that some individuals may fear animals or feel anxious in their presence.
This document aims to provide a simple set of “Dos and Don’ts” within the framework of the laws
of the land. These guidelines will help ensure safety, hygiene, and harmony while minimizing
conflicts regarding pets and strays in the society.
Applicability
This policy will come into effect three days after approval in the SGM and communication by the
Society Office to all residents, including family members, tenants, visitors, vendors, staff, dog
walkers, and other personnel employed by residents. This policy will remain in force unless
otherwise notified.
It is stated that in cases of divergence, the laws of the local corporation, state, and union will take
precedence over this document.
All pet owners must register their pets with the Municipal Corporation of Greater Mumbai
(MCGM) and obtain a valid dog license after submitting proof of anti-rabies vaccination.
Vaccinations must be kept up to date. Copies of the license should be submitted to the
Society Office for records.
Dogs must be leashed at all times in public spaces to ensure safety and control.
Pet owners and caregivers must clean up after their pets in public premises and dispose of
waste properly.
Carry poop bags or scoops to maintain cleanliness. Trash bins are available across Raheja
Vihar for disposal.
The society will impose a fine of Rs. 500 per incident for failing to clean up after pets.
Dog walkers and others entrusted with pet care must use the main gate only. Entry/exit
through the S1 gate is not permitted.
4. Clean-Up in Emergencies
In case of accidents (e.g., pets relieving themselves in society premises or lifts), pet owners
must clean immediately using disinfectants (e.g., Dettol or Savlon). This responsibility does
not fall on housekeeping staff.
5. Adult Supervision
Always supervise pets, especially around children. Children should be guided to interact with
pets safely and calmly.
Exercise caution while entering or exiting lifts with pets to avoid accidents involving leashes.
Discourage very young children from handling pets in lifts without adult supervision.
6. Lift Etiquette
When entering a lift with a dog, pet owners should ask other occupants if they are
comfortable. If someone is hesitant, wait for the next lift.
Follow a “first come, first take” protocol to avoid conflicts.
Limit the number of dogs in a lift to one unless they are from the same family and
accustomed to each other.
Feeding strays is commendable and should be done responsibly. Vaccination and neutering
of strays are encouraged.
Feeding areas within the society must be designated in consultation with the feeders. Feeding
stray dogs outside the premises is advised.
Unsupervised stray dogs should not be encouraged within society premises to ensure the
safety of residents, especially senior citizens.
Residents observing intentional violations are encouraged to address the matter politely with the
concerned individual to secure voluntary compliance. Avoid confrontations and escalate
unresolved issues to the Managing Committee.
