QUESTION ONE
(a) Define the income elasticity of demand. Explain why the income elasticity of
demand may be positive or negative.
(b) The demand function for good 1 is given by
1
Q = 30 − 2 P1 + 3P2 + 0.2Y
where P1 is the price of good 1, P2 is the price of another good and Y is income.
Calculate the income elasticity of demand when income increases from K100 to K150,
assuming P1 = 60 , P2 = 90 . Is good 1 normal or inferior?
(c) Without solving the equations, determine the nature of the roots of the given quadratic
equations.
(i) 2 x 2 − 3x − 5 = 0
(ii) x2 − 4x + 7 = 0
(d) Assume that a company knows that the cost to produce x items is given by the cost function
C ( x) = 20 x 2 + 1500 x dollars. It also knows that the revenue from x items is given by the
revenue function R ( x ) = 750 x + 300 . Find the maximum profit they can expect and how
many of these items they have to produce and sell to make this maximum profit.
QUESTION TWO
(a) If α , β and γ are the roots of the cubic equation ax 3 + bx 2 + cx + d = 0 prove that
−b c d
α + β +γ = , αβ + βγ + αγ = , αβγ = − .

(b) Given that x + 2 is a factor of f ( x ) = x 3 − 3x 2 − 4 x − 4 + p , find the value of p and hence
factorise f ( x ) .
(c) Solve the equations
(i) 2 x +3 = 21− x + 15
(ii) log 2 (2 x 2 + 3 x + 5) = 3 + log 2 ( x + 1)
(d) A virus is thought to spread through a chicken farm according to the equation
1
N = 2100 where N is the number of infected chickens, t is in days.
1 + 1950e −0.1t
2
(i) How many chickens are infected at t = 0 ?
(ii) Calculate the number of chickens infected after 0, 20, 40, 60, 80, 100 days.
(iii) Will all the chickens become infected eventually? Give reasons for your answer.
QUESTION THREE
(a) Express the following set of equations in matrix form and hence solve them using a
matrix method:
x + y + z =1
2x − y + z
x + 3y − z = 7
(b) A high class dressmaker makes three types of dresses. She makes cheap ‘everyday’ dresses,
medium – priced ‘cocktail’ dresses and expensive ‘ballroom’ dresses. The making of the
dresses involves the ‘inputs’ of fabric, labour, fastenings and machine time. The following
table shows the units of input required per dress for each dress type.
Labour 20 25 30
15 22
Fastenings 20
7 9 12
Machine
time
The dressmaker makes a combination of the three dress types which uses exactly 270
units of fabric, 1050 units of labour and 790 units of fastenings.
(c) Given the function g ( x ) = x 2 + 1 , state the range for the domain {−2, −1, 0,1, 2}
