Week 8 Reflection
I have learnt a lot about pharmacology throughout my lifespan, with principles such as
individualised pharmacologic therapy and the issues of prescription standing being the most
evidence-based practice. These skills will prove valuable when one acquires a master’s degree in
nursing because once in the nursing field, the contemporary master’s prepared nurse must
develop patient-centred care with an emphasis on patient safety. For instance, the knowledge of
pharmacokinetics to change dosages for elderly patients or the attitude towards cultural beliefs
when taking medications will enrich my understanding of how to deliver efficient and patient-
oriented care.
Patient-centred care as a concept was fully integrated into the design and execution of the
course, as most of the assignments and case studies demanded a critical assessment of a patient's
situation. These exercises strengthened my ability to select appropriate medications and assess
their effectiveness and safety, aligning with Program Outcome 1: offering standard and excellent
patient care that focuses on satisfying patients’ needs using holistic healthcare approaches. For
example, the case studies highlighted how the application of knowledge involved evaluating the
patient in totality and recognising sociocultural factors that invariably affect medication
This course mainly supported Competency 1.3f: applying decision-making models from
nursing or other knowledge areas to enhance clinical decision-making. The patient cases
assigned in the clinical assignments called for integrating complex pharmacological knowledge
with patient information to inform reasonable clinical judgments. For instance, applying
guidelines from the American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association Task Force on
Clinical Practice Guidelines (2018) enhanced my ability to evaluate treatment efficacy while
considering potential side effects and contraindications. The incorporation of these two models
of decision-making will help direct clinical judgement and support safe and sound care.
