GOAL AND SEEK
Q1.) Aryan Ltd. operates in the generator business and sells each generator for
Rs. 18000 and the quantity sold is 100. One can observe in the below table that the company
is suffering a loss of Rs.13.8 lacs. Furthermore, the maximum price for which a generator can
be sold is identified to be Rs. 18000. Variable cost is 10% of the price. The fixed cost is Rs.
3000000. Now, one must identify the no. of generators that can be sold, which will return
the break-even value (No Profit No Loss). Thus, the Profit value (Revenue – Fixed Cost +
Variable cost) needs to be zero to attain a break-even value.
STEP 1: Prepare a table.

STEP 2: Go to Data tab, select WHAT IF ANALYSIS, then select GOAL SEEK.
STEP 3: Then GOAL SEEK tab pops up, to select the value.

STEP 4: Then enter the GOAL SEEKING Status, and it shows, RESULTS.

Q2.) Let say you enrolled in a class. You currently have a grade of 65, and you need at least a
70 to pass the class. Luckily, you have one final assignment that might be able to raise your
average. You can use Goal Seek to find out what grade you need on the final assignment to
pass the class. In the image below, you can see that the grades on the first four assignments
are 58, 70, 72, and 60. Even though we don’t know what the fifth grade will be, we can write
a formula—or function—that calculates the final grade. In this case, each assignment is
weighted equally, so all we have to do is average all five grades by typing =AVERAGE (B2:B6).
Once we use Goal Seek, cell B6 will show us the minimum grade we need to make on that
assignment.
STEP :1 Prepare the table, having assignment and grade.

STEP 2: Then find the GOAL SEEK.

STEP 3: Then GOAL SEEK pops up, to select the values.

STEP 4: Enter the GOAL SEEKING STATUS.

Q 4.) Let say you replanning an event and want to invite as many people as you can without
exceeding a budget of $500. We can use Goal Seek to figure out how many people to invite.
In our example below, cell B4 contains the formula =B1+B2*B3 to calculate the total cost of
a room reservation, plus the cost per person.

STEP 1: Create a table according to question , and find the budget value using formula.

STEP 2: Then find the GOAL SEEK.

STEP 3: Go to data tab, select GOAL SEEK and enter the values.

STEP 4:Select goal seeking status and then ok.
