Grade 10 Mathematics – 3rd Term Exam

Time: 2 hours
Total Marks: 100

Section A: Algebra (20 Marks)

Q1. Solve for x:

3x^2 - 12x + 9 = 0 (4 marks)
Answer: x = 1 (Double root)

Q2. Simplify:
3x^2 - 6x / x^2 - x - 2 (4 marks)
Answer: (3x + 6) / (x + 1)

Q3. If f(x) = 2x^2 + 3x - 5, find f(2). (4 marks)

Answer: f(2) = 2(2)^2 + 3(2) - 5 = 8 + 6 - 5 = 9

Q4. Solve the following system of equations:

3x + 2y = 12
5x - y = 7 (4 marks)
Answer: x = 3, y = 2

Q5. If x + 2y = 8 and x - y = 4, find the values of x and y. (4 marks)

Answer: x = 6, y = 2

Q6. Factorize the expression: x^2 - 16 (2 marks)

Answer: (x + 4)(x - 4)

Section B: Geometry (20 Marks)

Q7. A triangle has sides of lengths 7 cm, 24 cm, and 25 cm. Prove that it is a
right triangle. (5 marks)
Answer: By Pythagoras theorem, 7^2 + 24^2 = 25^2, which is true, so it is a right
triangle.

Q8. Find the area of a circle with a radius of 7 cm. Use π = 3.14. (4 marks)
Answer: Area = π * r^2 = 3.14 * 7^2 = 153.86 cm²

Q9. A cylinder has a height of 10 cm and a base radius of 5 cm. Calculate its
volume and surface area. (5 marks)
Answer: Volume = π * r^2 * h = 3.14 * 5^2 * 10 = 785 cm³
Surface Area = 2 * π * r * (r + h) = 2 * 3.14 * 5 * (5 + 10) = 471 cm²

Q10. A right circular cone has a radius of 4 cm and a height of 9 cm. Find its
volume. (3 marks)
Answer: Volume = (1/3) * π * r^2 * h = (1/3) * 3.14 * 4^2 * 9 = 150.72 cm³

Q11. A square has a perimeter of 48 cm. Find its area. (3 marks)

Answer: Side = 48/4 = 12 cm, Area = side^2 = 12^2 = 144 cm²

Q12. The length of a rectangle is 5 cm more than its width. The perimeter of the
rectangle is 30 cm. Find the length and width of the rectangle. (5 marks)
Answer: Let the width be x. Then, length = x + 5.
2(x + x + 5) = 30, solving gives x = 5 cm and length = 10 cm.

Section C: Trigonometry (20 Marks)

Q13. Solve for x in the equation:
sin(x) = 0.5, 0° ≤ x ≤ 360° (5 marks)
Answer: x = 30°, 150°

Q14. A ladder leans against a wall, making a 60° angle with the ground. If the
ladder is 10 m long, how high does it reach on the wall? (5 marks)
Answer: Height = 10 * sin(60°) = 10 * √3/2 = 8.66 m

Q15. Prove the identity:

sec^2(x) - tan^2(x) = 1 (5 marks)
Answer: Using the Pythagorean identity sec^2(x) = 1 + tan^2(x), it simplifies to 1.

Q16. In a right triangle, if sin(θ) = 3/5, find cos(θ) and tan(θ). (5 marks)
Answer: cos(θ) = 4/5, tan(θ) = 3/4

Q17. Find the value of cos(45°) and sin(30°). (5 marks)

Answer: cos(45°) = √2/2, sin(30°) = 1/2

Section D: Probability and Statistics (20 Marks)

Q18. A bag contains 5 red, 3 green, and 2 blue balls. If one ball is drawn at
random, what is the probability that it is:
a) Red?
b) Not green? (4 marks)
Answer: a) 5/10 = 1/2, b) 8/10 = 4/5

Q19. The scores of 10 students in a math test are:

72, 85, 78, 90, 88, 76, 95, 89, 74, 92
Find the mean, median, and mode of the scores. (6 marks)
Answer: Mean = 82.3, Median = 84.5, Mode = None

Q20. A coin is flipped three times. What is the probability of getting exactly two
heads? (5 marks)
Answer: Probability = 3/8

Q21. A card is drawn at random from a standard deck of 52 cards. What is the
probability that it is:
a) A heart?
b) A face card? (5 marks)
Answer: a) 13/52 = 1/4, b) 12/52 = 3/13

Section E: Additional Problem-Solving (20 Marks)

Q22. If a^2 + b^2 = 100 and ab = 24, find (a + b)^2 and (a - b)^2. (5 marks)
Answer: (a + b)^2 = 148, (a - b)^2 = 52

Q23. The sum of the first n terms of an arithmetic sequence is Sn = 3n^2 + 5n.
a) Find the first term,
