1. Why is it important to know the biogeographic regions of the world? Was the
concept of biogeographic regions applied in the movie "Ice Age?"

Knowing biogeographic regions gives us primary information on identifying, and

classifying species found in different geographical areas and understanding the processes that

affect them and their ecosystem. The sorting of these species that show similar variations in

distribution is useful to know whether they exhibit certain patterns of biodiversity or whether

they have been subjected to the evolutionary process such as adaptations or random geographic

changes. This is useful because it allows the documentation of these patterns and processes to

develop particular conservation practices that will help in the survival of these species.

The concept of biogeographic regions can be particularly seen in the movie Ice Age:

Continental Drift. Here, the herd of various prehistoric animals got separated by a catastrophic

movement of the land mass (similar to continental drift but fictionize) that leads to the isolation

of a group of different species shown in the film. After such disturbance takes place, the remaining

species that got isolated in separated regions, thrived for their survival, growth, and evolution.

We can also note in the story, that the characters reunited after several journeys and

competitions among other species which can be related to the concept of biogeographic

movements which is an ecological mechanism that has greatly influenced their distribution area.
2. Explain the basis for the biogeographic regions as explained in this journal
article.

It was mentioned in the article that the repeated sea-level fluctuations during and prior

to the Pleistocene had a dramatic effect on the distribution of land and the connection between

islands of Asia and the Australian continents, which also affected the distribution and organization

of biodiversity in the Philippines. The concept of biogeographic regions was made to be the basis

of the reference studies mentioned in this article in recognizing its role as an important factor in

the evolution and assembling of biodiversity.

The content of the article states that the intermittent land connection due to sea-level

fluctuations created a geographic region in the Philippines called Pleistocene Aggregate Island

Complexes (PAIC) where there are patterns of faunal similarities. This suggests that gene flow

within the PAIC has been common, if intermittent. However, the effect of the existence of PAIC

made reference to be somewhat similar to the concept of biogeographic regions in their role in

biodiversity. Thus, over-emphasizing the importance of Pleistocene sea-level fluctuations. To

prove this assumption the researchers evaluated this concept in the biodiversity of shrews in the

PAIC geography. Shrews are chosen as it is a very common specie in all islands, is short-lived, and

has a limited ability to cross sea channels which fits the ideal system for testing the effects of

intermittent land connections on the diversification process in this geography.
