CHAPTER: HEIGHTS & DISTANCES
Worksheet - 10

1-mark questions:

1. In ΔABC, AD⊥BC. If AD = 7√3m, ∠ACD =60°, ∠ABD = 30°, then find BC.

2. Find the angle of elevation of the top of the tower from a point on the ground, which is 30m
away from the foot of the tower of height 10√3m.

3. A bridge is in the shape of a straight path across the river, making an angle of 60° with the
width of the river. If the length of the bridge is 100m, then find the width of the river.

4. A pole 6m high casts a shadow 2√3m along the ground, then find the sun’s elevation.

5. Find the angle of elevation of the Sun if the length of the shadow of a tower of height 20m is
20√3.

2 marks questions:

6. The ratio of the length of a tree and its shadow is 1: 1/√3. Find the Sun’s angle of elevation.

7. If two towers of height h1 and h2 subtend angles of 60° and 30° respectively at the midpoint of
the line joining their feet. Find h1: h2.

8. From the top of a lighthouse 60m light with its base at sea level, the angle of depression of a
boat is 30°. Find the distance of the boat from the foot of the lighthouse.

9. If the angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at distances ‘a’ and ‘b’ from the
base and in the same straight line with it are complementary, then find the height of the tower.

10. If the angles of elevation of the top of a tower from two points at distant ‘a’ and ‘b’ (a > b) from
its foot in the same straight line from it are 30° and 60°, find the height of the tower.

3 / 4-marks questions:

11. The angles of depression of the top and bottom of an 8m tall building from the top of a multi-
storied building are 30° and 45° respectively. Find the height of the multistoried building and
the distance between the two buildings.

12. From the top of a tower the angle of depression of an object on the horizontal ground is found
to be 60°. On descending 20m vertically downwards from the top of the tower, the angle of
depression of the object is found to be 30°. Find the height of the tower.

13. From the top of a lighthouse the angles of depressions of two ships on the opposite sides of it
are observed to be 30° and 60°. If the height of the lighthouse is ‘h’ meters and the line joining
the ships passes through the foot of the lighthouse, shows that the distance between the ships
is 4h/√3 m.

14. Two men are on the same side of the tower and in the same straight line with its base notice
the angle of elevation of the top of the tower to be 30° and 60°. If the height of the tower is
150m, find the distance between the two men.

15. The shadow of a building when the angle of elevation of the Sun is 45° is found to be 10m
longer than when it was 60°. Find the height of the building. (use √3 = 1.73)

16. The angle of elevation of a jet fighter from point A on the ground is 60°. After a flight of 10
seconds, the angle of elevation changes to 30°. If the jet is flying at a speed of 432km/hr, find
the constant height at which the jet is flying.

17. A pole of height 5m is fixed on the top of a tower. The angle of elevation of the top of the pole as
observed from point A on the ground is 60° and the angle of depression of point A from the top
of the tower is 45°. Find the height of the tower.

18. An aeroplane when flying at a height of 3125m from the ground passes vertically below
another plane at an instant when the angles of elevation of the two planes from the same point
on the ground are 30° and 60° respectively. Find the distance between the two planes at that
instant.

19. The angle of elevation of a cloud from a point 60m above a lake is 30° and the angle of
depression of the reflection of the cloud in the lake is 60°. Find the height of the cloud from the
surface of the lake.

20. Find the height of a mountain if the elevation of its top at an unknown distance from the base is
60° and at a distance 10km further off from the mountain, along the same line, the angle of
elevation is 30°.
