Time Signature

Name________________________ Instrument _____________

Vocabulary
Tempo – the speed of the music (the number on the metronome)
bpm – “beats per minute” – how many times the metronome will sound in 1 minute.
Time Signature – numbers that appear at the beginning of a song to tell you how many
beats are in a measure and what kind of note gets 1 beat.

Practice
The top number of a time signature tells you how many beats are in a measure.
The bottom number of a time signature tells you what kind of note gets ONE beat.

this time signature? (draw it)

2 How many beats What kind of note gets 1 beat in

2 in a measure? this time signature? (draw it)

Application
Fill in the measures with ONE (only one) REST (not note) when needed to equal the correct number of
beats for the time signature at the beginning of the line.

Repeat Sign

Name________________________ Instrument ____________

Vocabulary
Repeat Sign – indicates a section of music should be repeated
Single repeat sign – repeat from the beginning
Internal repeat sign – repeat only the section enclosed in the repeat

Practice
This repeat tells you to count the measures in this order: 1, 2, 1, 2, 3, 4. Count this line…

4$ q q q q \ h h : ; Q Q h \ D q h |
This repeat tells you to count the measures in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 1, 2, 3, 4. Count this line…

This repeat tells you to count the measures in this order: 1, 2, 3, 4, 3, 4. Count this line…

4$ q q q q \ h h [ Q Q h \Dq h ]
Application
1. Number the measures in the line below.
2. Write the order of the measures as you would perform them here: ___________________________

Dotted Quarter Note

Name________________________ Instrument _____________

Vocabulary
Dotted Note – a dot after a note increases a note’s duration by half
The Dot Rule – “A dot adds half the value of the note to the note”
To be more specific, a dot adds half the value to ANYTHING it follows.
This includes a rest or even another dot.
Dotted Half Note – a note with the duration of 3 beats
Dotted Quarter Note – a note with the duration of 1 ½ beats

Practice
Draw 5 dotted half notes: Draw 5 dotted quarter notes:

h. q.
THE DOT RULE – A dot adds half the value of the note to the note. (or rest)
12 beats (half of 8 is 4. 8 + 4 = 12)
Use the number samples below to practice. Ex. 8. = ___
6 beats
4. = ___ 50. = ___ beats 2. = ___ beats
10. = ___ beats 200. = ___ beats 1.= ___ beats
Now try it with some notes & rests: The first one is shown as an example.
w.= ___ w
6 beats ( = ___4 + =___ .
2 total =___ 6 )
W.
= ___ beats
h. = ___ beats H. = ___ beats
q. = ___ beats Q. = ___ beats
Application
A dot also adds half the value to a dot if it is a “double dotted note.”
What would the duration of a double dotted whole note be?
w.. = ___ beats (w = ___ + . =___ + . (half of the 1 dot) = ___ total =___)
st

Write in the counts and foot taps below. The first measure is shown as an example.

Articulation

Name________________________ Instrument _____________

Vocabulary
Articulation – a slight interruption of the air with the tongue
Tonguing – By default, all notes are tongued unless they are marked with a slur
Slur – a curved line connecting two or more different pitches
designates you do not tongue the notes

Practice
In the example below, the “T” designates that you tongue the note. When notes are
connected by a slur, you do not tongue the notes that are ‘under’ the slur. You tongue the
first note of the group and slur (do not tongue) the remaining notes.

Trace the “T” markings and slur markings above.

Application
Line #1 & Line #2 – Mark a “T” for notes that should be tongued. If notes should not be
tongued, do not mark anything.

Subdivision

Name________________________ Instrument _____________

Vocabulary

Pulse – the ‘internal’ rhythm within a note
Example: If you subdivide a half note by eighth notes, there are 4 pulses because
there are 4 eighth notes in a half note.

Practice
