Assignment Brief No. 2 – Forensic Analysis of Building Structure: Material,


Structural System, Forces, Load Transfer, Su pport and Deformation

We discussed in class structural, structural members and structural-system. We also discussed how
material plays an important role in the stability of any structure and how different forces act on a
structure and get transferred to the ground. Types of force, properties and behaviour of materials
used in construction or making an object/structure. We also looked upon, how structural materials
are selected and what role materials play in the stability of a structure. In your previous assignments,
you made structures using different materials (mentioned below) and analysed the stability of
structures under different loading conditions.
1. Making paper table and its analysis
2. Making dining table using Mechanics set and its analysis
Also, in BMC you made pin board combined writing board using wood, MS steel, laminate sheet, etc.

In this group assignment, you are expected to select any building on campus and do a structural
analysis of the building which includes measurements, structural elements, forces, loads and how
load transfers to ground.
Learning Outcome:
To help you gain some clarity in your understanding of structural elements, forces, loads and their
flow. Type of material used and why.

Tasks & Deliverables

1. Group presentation depicting the entire structure analysis of the building you selected.
Discuss about components of the structure, and how components of the structure behave.
What are the major load-bearing components? What is the core of the structure?
2. The essay must be about 1,500 words. Although I will count each image as equivalent to 150
words, the total equivalence will be limited to about 300 words. In other words, if you include,
two images, your text must be about 1,200 words, but if you include 10 images, your text
must still be at least about 1,200 words.

Instructions
1. You must type your essay. I will not accept handwritten work. Use a font of your choosing, but no
script or display fonts. The font size should be 12 points, and the text must be double-spaced.
2. Use MS Word, Embed your images in the Word file.
3. You are expected to submit the assignment just after completing your presentation.
4. All group members should have an equal share of their work in the assignment.
5. Your submittal file must include your name and your ID No.
