Line Codes
• Line coding is the process of converting digital data in to digital signal.
• Digital data is found in binary format.
• It is represented internally as series of 1s and 0s.
• There are three types of line coding schemes available:

Unipolar Encoding
Single voltage level to represent data
Binary 1, high voltage
Binary 0, no voltage is transmitted.
E.g. Unipolar – Non –return-to-Zero

Polar Encoding
Use multiple voltage levels to represent data.
E.g. Polar NRZ, RZ, Manchester, Differential Manchester
Bipolar Encoding
Use three voltage levels to represent binary data. Positive, negative and zero.
E.g. AMI

Advantage:
Easy to generate.

Disadvantage:
DC component development during long strings of 0 or 1 result in ‘baseline wander’.
Loss of synchronization during long strings of 0 or 1, as no transition available.
