Network – a combination/connection of 2 or more computers

It is the means of using computer and some other gadgets in processing,


storing, transmitting and receiving information within seconds.

 When you have two or more computers connected to each other, you
have a network.
 The purpose of a network is to enable the sharing of files and
information between multiple systems.
 The Internet could be described as a global network of networks.
 Computer networks can be connected through cables, such as
Ethernet cables or phone lines, or wirelessly, using wireless
networking cards that send and receive data through the air waves

A computer network is a connection of two or
more computers, and other network devices
(i.e. printers, external hard drives, modems
and routers, etc), that are linked together so
that they can communicate with each other,
exchange information, share data,
hardware and other resources.

Networks are often classified by their physical or organizational
extent or their purpose.

 LAN - Local Area Network


 MAN - Metropolitan Area Network
 WAN - Wide Area Network

 PAN - Personal Area Network
 WLAN - Wireless Local Area Network
 VPN- Virtual Private Network

A LAN is a network that connects computers and devices in a limited
geographical area such as home, school, computer laboratory, office
building, or closely positioned group of buildings.
Each computer or device on the network is a node.

A MAN is a large computer network that usually spans a city. It is a
group of LANs located in a city.
For example, a company has branches spread over Lagos.

A WAN is a computer network that
covers a large geographic area such as
a city, country, or spans even
intercontinental distances, using a
communications channel such as telephone
lines, cables, satellites, etc.
