Section 1

Oct 26, 2023

Problem Set
1. Prove that the coefficient of correlation r is unaffected by change of origin,
2. If X and Y are two independent RVs each following N (0, 3), what is the probability that the point (X,Y)
lies between the lines 3X+4Y=5 and 3X+4Y=10?
3. Calculate the coefficient of correlation between X and Y using following data

x 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
y 9 8 10 12 11 13 14 16 15

4. Assume that the random variable X and Y have joint PDF

1 3
f (x, y) = x y; 0 ≤ x ≤ 2, 0 ≤ y ≤ 1 (1)
2
Determine if X and Y are independent.
5. Given the join probability density
(
2
f (x, y) = 3 (x + 2y) if 0 < x < 1, 0 < y < 1
(2)
0 otherwise
Find

(a) Marginal density of X and Y.

(b) Conditional density of X give Y = y, and use it to evaluate P ( X≤1/2
Y =1/2 ).

6. The useful life (in hours) of a certain kind of vacuum tube is a random variable having the pdf
(
20000
3 x>0
f (x, y) = (x+100) (3)
0 otherwise

If three of tubes operate independently, find

(a) the joint probability density of X1 , X2 and X3 representing the lengths of their useful lives.
(b) the value of P (X1 < 100, X2 < 100, X3 ≥ 200).
