32. Abdul threw a basketball in the direction of the basketball hoop which traversed a parabolic
path in a vertical plane as shown below.
The equation of the path traversed by the ball is 𝑦 = 𝑎𝑥 2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐 with respect to a xy-
coordinate system in the vertical plane.
The ball traversed through the points (10,16), (20,22) and (30, 25). The basketball hoop is at

the floor to the top edge of the rim. Did the ball successfully go through the hoop? Justify
your answer.

37. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below.
In an elliptical sport field, the authority wants to design a rectangular soccer field with the

An insurance company believes that people can be divided into two classes: those who are
accident prone and those who are not. The company’s statistics show that an accident-prone
person will have an accident at sometime within a fixed one-year period with probability 0.6,
whereas this probability is 0.2 for a person who is not accident prone. The company knows
that 20 percent of the population is accident prone.
(i) What is the probability that a new policyholder will have an accident within a year of
purchasing a policy?
(ii) Suppose that a new policyholder has an accident within a year of purchasing a policy.
What is the probability that he or she is accident prone?
