ACTIVITY

I will group you into 4 groups, then each group

should have a representative to choose a colored
1. paper here in front. I will give you 5 minutes to
solve what is Witten in the colored paper, and don’t
forget to write the step when you solve the
2. problem, afterwards attached your output in front.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, the students are should be
able to:
a. identify the four steps of Polya’s problem-solving
method (understand the problem, devise a plan,
carry out the plan,look back;
b apply Polya’s method to solve various mathematical
problems; and
c.show collaborate behavior when perform problem –
solving.
POLYA’S 4
STEPS IN
PROBLEM
SOLVING
•Known as the father of modern
problem solving.
•He was one of the foremost
recent mathematician to make a
study of problem solving.
• He was born in Hungry and
moved to united States in
1940
•One of the best known book
Polya published is “How to solve George Polya
it” in 1945
Polya advocate 4 steps in
problem solving
STEP 1
1.Understand the problem
• You have to read and understand
the problem, study the essential
mathematical concept by
considering the terminology and
natation used in the problem.
1.Understand the problem
To help you focus on understanding the
problem, consider the following questions.
• What kind of a problem is it ?
• What is the unknown?
• What information is given?
• What is the goal?
STEP 2
2. Devise a plan
• Find the link between the data and the
unknown, you must start somewhere, so try
something. But if an immediate connection
cannot be found then it would be necessary
to consider more problems. You should
obtain eventually a plan of the solution.
Think of ways on how you are going to attack
the problem.
STEP 3
3. Carry out the plan
• As soon as you have an idea for
the solution of the problem,
write it down instantly than carry
out your plan of the solution.
STEP 4
4. Look back
• Once you have a potential
solution, check to see if it
works.
Example 1
Instruction: Solve the given problem by using the Polya’s 4
steps in problem solving.
1. There are 364 first grade students in the Park Elementary
school if there are 26 more girls than boys, how many girls are
there?
1..There are 364 first grade students in the Park Elementary
school if there are 26 more girls than boys, how many girls
are there?
Step 1:
Elementary school has a total of 364 first grade. The
problem is, we need to figure out how many girls there are
if there are 26 more girls than boys.
Step 2:
If we represent the number of boys by b the b=boys and
b+26= girls to get the answer, we will use equation
b+b+26=364..
Step 3: Step 4:
b+b+26 =364 Since b represent the number of
2b+26= 364
boys, 169(boys) + 195 (girls)=
2b=364 - 26
2b=338 364 and based on the Problem
___
2b= 338
___ there should be 26 more girls
2 2 which proves that the solution is
b= 169 boys correct.
Number of girls
b+26
169 + 26 = 195 girls
Example 2:
2. Ziane has 2 blouses, 2 skirts, and 2 pairs of sandals. How
many different outfits does she have?
Step 1
The problem tells us that Ziane has 2 blouses, 2
skirts, and 2 pairs of sandals. Now she has to
combine each of the blouses, skirts and Sandals to
come up with an outfit. So what we need to do
here is to determine the possible outfits that she
can have.
Step 2:
We will make an organizer list of all the possible answer
using a tree diagram. This will help us ensure that no
answer will be repeated
Step 3:
Step 4:
Considering the diagram, we can see that the possible,
combination are (B1,Sk1,s1), (B1,Sk1,s2), (B1,Sk2,s1),
(B1,Sk2,s2), (B2,Sk1, s2),(B2,Sk1, s2), (B2,Sk2,s1) ,
(B2,Sk2,s2).

Hence, there are 8 possible outfits of Ziane could have.

LET’S HAVE AN ACTIVITY
Assignment:
Instruction: Solve the given problem by using the
Polya’s 4 steps in problem solving.
1. Helena, Shane and Tere are varsity players in the
women’s basketball team of their school. Their positions
are guard, forward and center. Given the following
conditions find who plays each position in the team.
a.Helena and the center bought a mango shake for Tere.
