2.1. Block diagram description
Block diagram shows all transmitter functions and, for better understanding,
equipment circuit diagrams should be reviewed:
This consists of the 499907323 board, this incorporates the audio input circuits,
modulated oscillator and PLL. The audio inpuit can be configured from the display as
an MPX input or Mono input. With MPX configuration, response is flat from 40Hz to
100KHz. If Mono is selected, either 50/75µS pre-emphasis can be selected. The
normalized level in both cases is +4dBm/400Hz for ±75KHz deviation. This level can
be varied between 0 and +12 dBm.
Modulated oscillator generates a RF signal between 87.5 and 108Mhz with a level of
+3dBm ±1 dB.
The signal at the Q1 emitter passes through U9, this is a programmable digital
attenuator with margin of 0 to -30db. The output appears on the SMB connector J2.
When the transmitter is in Stop or minimum power the digital attenuator U9 is set at
the maximum attenuation, this varies in function of the output power.

The transmitter requires one AC/DC power supply for the output amplifier. This
equipment supply can provide up to 2000W and the output is from 30Vdc to 50Vdc
according on output power.
The transmitter also needs other power supply for the auxiliary circuits. This second
power supply is made up of T1 with two independent secondaries that, once rectified,
filtered and stabilized provide voltages for the control circuits of +12Vdc and -12Vdc
and from these +5 and -5Vdc voltages are derived.

Communications board.
This is a general purpose Communications card that can be included as an option with
the new Seratel Series of equipments. The card incorporates functionality for
monitoring remote equipments and the sending of event SMS to a mobile telephone.
Specification:
The card is based upon a Freescale 8 bit microprocessor mother card with an optional
Monitor Radio daughter card.
RS-232C female 9 pin D type connector for connection to a PC. The port speed is
37.4k, asynchronous, 8 bit, no parity. The main purpose of this port is for connection
to a PC with the Seratel monitor and control application at a local level.
33
RS-232C male 9 pin D type connector for connection to a modem (normally a GSM
data modem). The port speed is 38.4k. Using this modem port a remote connection can
be made using the PC based Seratel monitor and control application to effect
maintenance of the remote equipment. The card can also be configured for automatic
supervision of the attached equipment events. According to the monitoring profile,
events can be raised and notified to the user by means of standard SMS to a mobile
telephone. If so configured the user can request status information of the remote
equipment and effect control commands, such as START, STOP.
USB port. This has the same functionality of the RS-232C PC port, specifically for
portable PC that is many cases do not incorporate the legacy RS-232C port as
standard.
A loop through RS-485 port, male-female 9 pin D type connectors. This port can be
configured for 2 wire or 4 wire operations, loop through or terminated. The port speed
is 2400b. There is a specific application incorporated in the CommBoard for the
implementation of the R.N.E (Spanish National Radio) equipment monitoring
protocol. However should general purpose RS-485 communication be desired, the
Seratel monitor and control application allows selection of this means of
communication without activation of the R.N.E protocols.
RJ45 Ethernet port. This port comes as standard but inactive. An optional Ethernet
server module can be plugged into the card to provide the Ethernet LAN functionality.
This Ethernet operation is in-compatible with the RS-485 operation and requires that
the RS-485 functions be disabled.
This is an optional daughter card that incorporates a simple FM receiver. Using this
option off air monitoring of the transmission can be carried out. The received signal is
decoded and the MPX or monophonic levels monitored. If required, the absence of
modulation can be used to trigger an alarm event. The radio card also incorporates a
RJ11 jack that can be used to listen to the off transmission using a mobile telephone.
In parallel with the RJ11 port there is a standard 3.5mm jack socket for use with such
headphones.
The CommBoard card uses the Freescale MC9S08JM60 micro-processor. This micro-
processor connects to the external equipment using a SPI connection via the 16 pin flat
connector J4. Using this port the micro-processor is able to maintain communication
with the equipment using a standardised protocol applicable to all Seratel equipments
fitted with the CommBoard option.
The micro-processor interfaces to the serial port via the UARTS U4 and U5. The USB
J1 port is native to the micro-processor and only requires protection circuit U8 to
complete the USB circuitry.
The U6 is a SPI controlled UART used as the interface to the RS-485 UART U7 or the
Ethernet server module U12. The choice of connection is by headers J14, J15, J16, J17
and the DIL switch SW1. When the RS-485 format is used the U7 forms and isolated
UART interface with the physical RS-485 pins. Using J7, J8, J9, J10, J11, 2 wire or 4
34
wire communication can be enabled, The pairs terminated in a load or left as pass
through. The default is with the four jumpers J7, J8, J10, J11in the position nearest to
the external panel of the card and the J9 open, this is the 4 wire, no load configuration.
ON OFF
SW1:4 Monitor equipment with Modem No monitor equipment
SW1:3 Monitor Radio Board No Radio Board
SW1:2 Use RS-485 port Use Ethernet if server option present
SW1:1 Software update Normal usage
Note: This switch only activates the physical interfaces. The software has to be
configured to complete the action of activation of an interface. For example if the
modem port is activated. The software has to be configured if it is desired to use SMS
and alarm notifications, once physically activated the modem port will only accept
remote connections from the SupCE V2 program or the Link program.
The PC serial port and USB port are always ready for use.
The 40 pin socket U12 is for the option Ethernet server. This is a field upgrade with
automatic detection and configuration of the CommBoard when the server is inserted.
Only SW1:3 need setting to make the choice of RS-485 or Ethernet.
The Radio card and Ethernet server are options that are described in more detail
elsewhere.
The Radio card is a simple FM receiver that allows off air monitoring of the
transmission. The modulation levels are monitored and if desired events can be raised
on modulation failure. The transmission can also be listened to from a mobile
telephone or locally on headphones.
The Ethernet server allows connection via LAN using the Link program or from an
Ethernet browser for monitoring and operation of the attached equipment. In addition
a SNMP trap can be activated so that alarm messages are sent to a remote LAN
address.
The CommBoard is configured using either the SupCE V2 application or the Link
application. The difference being that the SupCE V2 application is for usage with an
unique equipment and effects the communication via the PC serial port or GSM
modem. Whereas the Link application allows simultaneous connection to various
equipments through a unique connection and any of the communication options
available on the CommBoard.
35
5. POWER MAINTENANCE.
The transmitter requires periodic power maintenance; this is the extraction and replacement of
air filter on the front of the equipment. SERATEL recommends cleaning the equipment inside
using a compressor or suction cleaner when the equipment state requires.
Phillips Screwdriver.
Two Welders of 40/60W with earth wire (ground).
Antistatic System of manipulation with wristband.
Digital Multimeter.
To proceed as continues:
1. Switch off equipment and disconnect power supply cable from the back panel.
3. Remove both screws that hold the transistor, with their washers.
36
4. Remove soldering from transistor terminals and clean the printed circuit
contacts using a mesh of copper or any kind of soldering remover. Clean with
a soft paper all remains. Check if the board is perfectly clean and without
residues.
Using a multimeter in the cursor of the potentiometer R1 of power stage, fix it with a
slot screwdriver in order to reach a resistance of 0 ohm. This is obtained fitting the
above mentioned dimmer in hourly sense. With this adjustment we achieve that it does
not have polarization in the door for later, and using an ammeter, fix IDQ value.
37
The circuit is ready to be installed a new transistor.
2. Place the transistor in the power stage spendthrift: do it carefully in its right
position.
As there is a graphite piece which is heat conductor, it is not necessary to apply
silicone to this transistor.
Verify that the graphite piece is in mint condition. In case of changing it, cut it
right measured.
Transistor drain, with a chamfer, will be located in the circuit track close to T4
and T5 (white cables).
38
3. Put in screws, and their washers, and fix them tight with a star screwdriver
(Torque wrench 0, 8 cNm).
Disconnect power supply from the rear and check if load is connected to equipment.
Ensure the equipment is connected to the antenna or a 1000W dummy load. Place
equipment in a vertical position so we can access to power stage and power supply.
Put the jumper that is next to the 2000W switched mode power supply cable in the
furthest position from the control connector.
39
Put an ammeter, or multimeter with 1A scale, in bteen the exit of the switched power
supply and the power stage power supply connector. Remove the top lid of the
equipment and disconnect the fuse F1 of the 4W pre-amplifier
Connect the equipment to the mains and put the front panel switch in position I
Using a multimeter check that there no voltage at the input to the switched supply, nor
at the output of the same..
Press START to check if there are operating both fans of switched power supply.
Verify voltage in switched power supply, it should be around 50Vdc.
Use a multimeter to measure voltage in the Q1 gate. Initially it will be 0V since we put
to ground the tap point of the potentiometer R1 that polarizes the gate.
Adjust the above mentioned potentiometer to obtain 200 mA. Measure in the gate of
Q1, there will be approximately 1,5 Vdc.
Switch off the equipment. Remove the ammeter. Replace the red cable, in the terminal
block of the switched power stage.
Replace the 2000W switched power supply jumper back in the position next to the
control cable.
40
Set the equipment to minimum power then increase it, whilst monitoring the values of
current, voltage, incident power and reflected power. Consult the factory supplied test
measurement sheets.
NOTE:
If the equipment has an optional 2000W power supply, check that the used one
will be the one that is activated (select it in CONFIGURATION menu).

Connect to the equipment. The window will change to that shown below. The
application automatically determines the type of remote equipment, the name (if
configured) and the presence of a CommBoard. A successful connection illuminates
the green connection LED, otherwise if red communication with the remote equipment
was not achieved.
42
Click on the Icon to display the system menu again. If a CommBoard is detected then
the menu will have additional items as shown below. The first three items specifically
refer to operation with the CommBoard. These items are:
The item CommBoard (PlacaComm) will open a new window for configuration of the
CommBoard parameters.
The item Address (Dirección) refers to the internal address to be used by the
equipment when multiple equipments are connected through a single communications
trunk. A suitable address needs to be set before the Link application is used.
The item Name (Nombre) refers to the local name defined for the equipment. This
name is optional but is useful for facilitating the identification of an individual
equipment when using the Link application.
Here we only describe the usage of the first item. For a more detailed explanation of
the other items refer to the Link application description. In the case of there being no
CommBoard, that is the equipment only has a simple serial port, then neither the
system menu or the initial entry window change.
Click on the first system menu item to open the CommBoard window.
43
The buttons displayed on the right of the form relate to the physical configuration of
the CommBoard. If the Radio card, Ethernet server or RS-485 interfaces are activated
the appropriate buttons will appear.
The Identification Button. This allows the identification associated with the
CommBoard to be changed. This identification is shown along side the button. This
name is used by the CommBoard when SMS are generated and allows the source of
the message to be easily identified.
Change Time Button. This update the CommBoard with the local time of the PC used
for the connection. This time is used when SMS are generated and allow the time of a
message to be known. The current time configured is displayed along side the button.
Note: In the case of local time changes (eq: summer time, winter time) the
CommBoard will need to be updated.
There are 8 principal alarms used for the generation of SMS. This check box allows a
mask to be made to that only specific alarms are monitored and alarm events be
informed. The other box means that any alarm that the equipment generates and does
not fall in the category of one of the other 7 alarms will be detected. In order to
determine the cause of this alarm a remote connection must be made to the equipment
to inspect in more detail the alarm causes.
The Update Alarms button will update the alarms mask for the 8 principal alarms.
44
The SMS window.
If the modem port is activated and the equipment monitoring configured on SW1:1
then, if desired various type of SMS can be sent to one or more mobile telephones or
received. To use the SMS the “Use SMS” box needs to be ticked, otherwise none of
the other options will have effect as follows:
a) The “Alarm message” option activates the sending of alarm messages according to
the alarm mask profile configured.
b) The “Monitor message” option allows the reception of SMS to receive status
requests.
c) The “Command message” option allows the reception of commands to change the
state of the attached equipment. A password is required.
The Telephone button. This brings up the telephone number window that allows up to
4 telephone numbers to be noted. The numbers are used for SMS notifications. In the
case of SMS usage activation it is obligatory that at least one number be configured in
the first position of the list. The * is available for a new number. The numbers are
entered or edited in the Edit Telephone Nº text box and updated with Update Number
button.
45
The Telephone Window.
The Alarm mask button opens an additional configurable alarm mask. This allows
alarms for lack of modulation to be configured when there is a Radio Board or the
R.N.E protocol is configured for use with the RS-485 port,
The Status Mask has the options for the sending of Status SMS. For example SMS can
be sent advising of any change of equipment state from STOP to START or viceversa.
The RS-485 Mask is specific to using the R.N.E protocol over a RS-485 connection,
though the left, right, mpx option can also be used with a Radio Board to raise an
alarm when there is a failure of modulation. The Start only alarm is specific to the
R.N.E RS-485 protocol and raises an alarm after a main supply failure.
The schedule button. This is for the entry of a schedule of operation of the attached
equipment. On a daily basis 4 periods can be configured, changing either the power or
frequency or both of the equipment.
46
The Schedule Window.
Click on the activate button to activate the schedule, the LED will turn green showing
activation. Click on a day to bring up the window to set the daily profile.
Each day has 4 independent periods. The periods must be sequential in time but can be
activate independently. The period comprises the time when the period is to start and
the frequency and power to be adopted in this period. This status is maintained until
the next period is encountered. The four frequencies shown are the four frequencies
configured in the equipment. Whereas the four possible power levels are set in the
CommBoard configuration.
47
Password.
The Password button. This allows the password associated with the CommBoard to be
set. This password is used to verify SMS sent commands.
Enter the old password in the top text box. The factory default is 0123. Enter the new
password in the lower text box. If the old password is correct the new password is
accepted, the pressing the accept button the password is updated and the window
closed.
The Power button opens the power profile. This profile is used along with the
schedule to set the equipment power profile. Any four powers, including STOP can
be set.
The power tracking option causes the CommBoard to track the power fail alarm trip
level configured in the equipment. This is means the power fail alarm will be raised
when the equipment power fail alarm is raised. This is activated by default.
The Event button opens the event window. All SMS alarm messages cause an event
to be registered in the CommBoard. Up to 8 alarms can be registered.
The date and time of the event is shown first, then the type event that has been raised.
The detail of the event can be shown by clicking on the event description Yes or No.
This will bring up a window giving more details of that event. Examples of these two
windows are shown below.
48
The Event Window.
49
CommBoard SMS.
In this section we consider the interaction with the CommBoard by means of SMS when a
GSM modem is connected to the modem port, SW1:1 is on for monitoring the attached
equipment and the CommBoard configured for some type of SMS usage.
Two levels of SMS can be used, those for monitoring purposes, that do not change the
equipment status. These SMS do not require a password. The other level requires a
password since the equipment status is changed.
The format of each type of command is given below. All SMS must be in capitals in the
format shown. In general all the measurement requests reflect the measurements available
from the front panel of the equipment.
In order for state change commands to be effected the equipment must be in the Remote
mode, if not an informative message is returned.
50
The Command SMS.
Px PWD0123 Set the power level to x * 10% (eg: P5 set 50% output power)
Note:
the password 0123 should be changed for the actual password configured on the
CommBoard
SNMP. (optional).
The LAN management of the Seratel equipments with the incorporation of the
Communications Board is based upon a three-levels structure functionality.
The communications board incorporates an IP based server that interfaces between the
LAN on one side and the equipment control board on the other side to provide the three
level structure functionality.
One the first level there is a standard web based server that permits any common internet
browser using push-pull html technology (eg: Internet explorer version 8 and up) to
connect to the server and receive the equipment parameters. An example is given at the end
of the document.
This is a simple level of control and visualisation intended to give an overview of the
situation of the Seratel equipment.
On the second level we have management and monitoring using SNMP v2c with a MIB
Browser or SNMP management application on a PC or workstation. The values of the
Seratel equipment parameters can be obtained and many control actions can be performed.
The example in the appendix shows an example of MIB interrogations. There is event
51
information, SNMP configuration and some equipment parameters. The SNMP SET can
be used to write an equipment parameter.
There is a facility for the generation of traps to up to four destinations. The traps are
generated according to a configurable mask, each with an assigned priority level. NTP
server synchronisation is incorporated to maintain the equipment time level synchronised
with a centralised NTP source. The example in the appendix shows the “I am alive” trap
that is periodically sent by the Seratel equipments. The format of the trap information can
be seen.
The third level of management is using the Seratel management program. This provides a
GUI interface to multiple Seratel equipments using USB, serial port , GSM modem (SMS),
RS-485 and LAN communication. In the case of LAN communication the SNMPv2c
protocol is encapsulated in a graphical presentation. This is the most sophisticated level of
management offered for Seratel equipments that allows a simultaneous graphical level
management of various Seratel equipments from a single management station. The
examples in the appendix show some of the management screens of this application.
52
Example of traps received by a SNMP management station.
Example of the Seratel management application showing a connection via SNMP to the
equipment at IP 10.0.0.192.
53
Example of the Seratel management system connected to a 1KW transmitter, a
communications board and the communication board based radio for off air monitoring of
the transmitter program.

6.2. RDS Compact Program Description
The Seratel RDS card is an optional card that is added to the Seratel Compact version stereo
encoder. This optional card will be pre-installed by the factory with a preliminary setup using
the user supplied by the user at the moment of purchase.
The RDS card will synchronise automatically to the 19KHz pilot of the stereo encoder,
generate a RDS stream according to the configuration and re-inject the generated stream into
the MPX signal.
Setup Instructions:
First of all the RDS application software has to be installed from the supplied CD on to the
PC to be used for configuration, control and maintenance of the RDS card. It is not obligatory
that the Seratel application is used, any RDS encoder program using the UECP 1998 standard
protocol can be used.
Install the application by inserting the disk in the CD drive or navigating to the setup
application on the CD. Follow the setup instructions.
Application usage:
Connect the PC to the RDS card serial port with a standard 9 pin, male, female, 9 core cable.
Click the connect button to connect to the RDS card. The display will show the current
parameters of the RDS card. The default address is 1023, 63. This address can be change
when in a multiple RDS installation by clicking the Change address button and entering the
new parameters. The new address parameters will be stored in the RDS card, ready for the
next connection attempt.
55
The connect LED shows the connection is successful, The RDS is on. The RDS can be
turned of by clicking the button under RDS on.
If the RDS incorporates the real time clock (RTC) the current UTC time is shown. The correct
time zone can be configured by clicking the RDS time button. Note: RDS time is always UTC
with the appropriate time zone slip.
PS is the broadcast name. Write the correct name and press update PS.
PI is the broadcast identification. Write the identification code as assigned by the nation
broadcast authorities. Press Update PI to save.
PTY, PTYN are the broadcast informative information. Choose PTY from the drop down list.
This can be dynamic or permanent. If permanent is required check the box at the side of PTY
and click the button update PTY, otherwise leave the box unchecked and click the button.
PTYN is the additional broadcast information associated with PTY. Normally this is dynamic
but can be made permanent by checking the box at the side. Click the button Update PTYN to
update the RDS card.
The Flags and DI parameters are provide additional broadcast status information. Configure
as required and click update.
Dynamic PTY Prepare the RDS decoder to use dynamic PTY reception
There are three more buttons AF, RT and PIN. These bring up new windows that allow these
features to be configured.
56
AF Alternative frequencies. Up to 8 alternative frequencies can be deployed.
RT Rich text. This is a dynamic string that is never saved. The RT string is a constant 64
characters. If the string is short it can be repeated in the same 64 character buffer. Always
ensure the string length is 64 characters. If less than 64 characters are entered the string will
be buffered to reach the minimum of 64 characters.
PIN This is used to define a program information time spot so that the RDS decoder will
automatically switch to the program when the emission time is reached. This is dynamic.
Technical Note:
For complete understanding of the RDS protocol and features, the book “RDS: The Radio
Data System” by Dietmar Kopitz and Bev Marks is highly recommended.
