Bivariate Distribution (Discrete RV)
Bivariate Distribution (Discrete RV)
INTRODUCTION
A bivariate distribution is a probability distribution that involves two random variables, often
denoted as X and Y.
Examples of bivariate distributions
• Height and Weight
• Temperature and Ice Cream Sales
Bivariate distribution or joint probability distribution are of two types:
• Discrete joint distribution
• Continuous joint distribution.

JOINT PROBABILITY MASS FUNCTION:
Two discrete random variables X and Y are said to be joint probability mass function.
PXY ( x, y) = P( X = x, Y = y)
or
P(X=x) and P(Y=y)
PX ( X = x) = PXY ( x, y )
y
PY (Y = y ) = PXY ( x, y )

• Conditional Probability function of X, given that Y=y:
It is defined by:
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥 𝐴𝑁𝐷 𝑌 = 𝑦)
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥|𝑌 = 𝑦) =
𝑃(𝑌 = 𝑦)
or
f X / Y ( x / y ) = P( X = x | Y = y )
• Conditional Probability function of Y, given that X=x:
It is given by:
𝑃(𝑌 = 𝑦 𝐴𝑁𝐷 𝑋 = 𝑥)
𝑃(𝑌 = 𝑦|𝑋 = 𝑥) =
𝑃(𝑋 = 𝑥)
or
fY / X ( y / x) = P(Y = y | X = x)
Find (i) PXY (X=1, Y=3), (ii) PY(Y=3), (iii) PX(X=1), (iv)expected value of X, (v) expected
value of Y, (vi) variance of X, (vii) variance of Y and (viii) Cov(X, Y).
Solution:
(i) PXY (X=1, Y=3) =0.11
(ii) PY(Y=3) =0.26
(iii) PX(X=1) =0.29
(iv) Expected value of X
E ( X ) = xPX ( x)
x
= 0(0.24) +1(0.29)+2(0.33)+3(0.14)
= 1.37

(v) Expected value of Y
E (Y ) = y.Py ( y )

(vi) Variance of X = x 2 PX ( x) − ( E ( X )) 2

Example 3. Given the following bivariate probability distribution obtain (i) marginal
distributions of X and Y, (ii) the conditional distribution of X given Y = 2
Y X -1 0 1
0 1/15 2/15 1/15
1 3/15 2/15 1/15
2 2/15 1/15 2/15

Solution.
Y X -1 0 1 p ( x, y )

P( X = x Y = 2)
P( X = x | Y = 2) =
