Question 1 (Based on Zill: Exercise 1.3 nr 14 and Excersice 2.8 nr 17(a) and 18)
The right-circular conical tank shown on the left loses water out of a cricular
hole at its bottom. Determine a differential equation for the height of the
water ℎ at time 𝑡. The radius of the hole is 2in.,g=32 ft/𝑠 2 , and the
friction/contraction factor is 𝑐=0.6

Suppose the tank is 20 ft high and has

radius 8 ft and the circular hole has radius
2 in. If the tank is initially full, how long will
it take the tank to empty?

Now suppose the tank is inverted as shown on the right, and that
water leaks out of a circular hole of radius 2 in. in the center of the
circular base. Is the time it takes to empty a full tank the same as for
the tank with vertex down (on left). Take the friction/contraction factor as 𝑐=0.6 and g=32 ft/𝑠 2 .

Question 2
A cylindrical tank has a cross-sectional area 𝐴𝑤 and height 𝐻 with a circular hole of cross-
sectional area of 𝐴ℎ in the bottom. Let ℎ(𝑡) denote the height of the water in the tank at
time 𝑡.
(a) If the tank is initially filled to the top with water, find the DE for the height ℎ(𝑡) of the
water in the tank at time 𝑡.
(b) Now find the time in which the tank will empty.
(c) Suppose that the tank has a height of 5 m, that the radius of the bottom is 1 m and that
the circular hole has a radius 1 cm. If the tank is initially full and 𝑐 = 0.6, how long will it
take the tank to be empty?

Question 3 (Based on Zill Exercise 2.8 nr 21)

Determine a differential equation for the velocity 𝑣(𝑡) of a mass 𝑚 sinking in water that
imparts a resistance proportional to the square of the instantaneous velocity and also exerts
an upwar buoyant force whose magnitude is given by Archimedes’ principle (The upward
force of the water on an object is equal to the weight of the water displaced.
