Word Processor
Answer the following:
1. Write the steps to print a document.
Ans:
Step-1: Connect the printer to a computer
Step-2: Select the print option from the file menu or click on the print icon from
standard toolbar.
Step-3: Select the printer name.
Step-4: Give the range of pages to be printed
Step-5: Click to print the pages in reverse order.
Step-6: Enter the number of copies to be printed.
Step-7: Click on the ‘Print’ button to print the document.
2. Explain any 5 features of a word processor.
Ans: The important features of word processor that make it useful are:
Editing: In a word processor, editing a document can be easily done without
making the document messy. There is no need to retype the whole text while doing
alternation.
Interface: A word processor provides layout i.e. interface which makes it
convenient to type documents without using paper or stationery.
Navigation between pages: A user can easily switch from one page to another
page of a document instantly in a word processor to view or edit it.
Formatting: A word processor provides various options from formatting the text,
for e.g., the user can change the look of the document by changing its font colour,
size, style, appearance, etc.
Graphics: In a word processor, graphical pictures can be added in the document.
There are various tools to draw shapes and designs in word processors.
3. What are non-printing character?
Ans: Characters like alphabets, numbers, special characters are visible on the
screen while typing but whenever the ‘Enter’ key, ‘Tab’ key, ‘Spacebar’ key.,etc is
pressed, it does not represent a written symbol or part of the text within a
document, but rather used for defined action. Such character which is non-printable
in nature is known as non-printing character.
4. List the names of some common Word processor.
Ans: Open office Writer, Lyx, KWord, Microsoft word, WordPerfect, AbiWord,
etc.
5. While using the ‘spelling and grammar’ option from the tool menu, what type of
suggestion appear in the dialog box?
Ans: Not in dictionary: The unrecognized words which are not present in ‘Writer’
dictionary are displayed in the ‘Not in dictionary’ textbox.
Suggestion: Possible suggestions for the words are displayed in the suggestion
box.
Ignore once: This button is used if no change is required in the word.
Ignore all: This button is used if the user wants to ignore the suggestion for
particular word throughout the document.
Add: It adds the underlined word as a valid word in the dictionary of the ‘Writer’
of the host computer.
Change: This button replaces the wrong word with the suggested word.
Change all: This button replaces the wrong word with suggested word in the entire
document.
AutoCorrect: This button changes the mis-spelt words in the whole document
automatically.
6. How will you protect the document from being opened and edited by others
in Writer?
Ans: Save the document with password to ensure the security and confidentiality
of text.
The steps to protect the document using password in Writer are:
i. Select File->Save.
ii. Select the location on disk to save the file.
iii. Type a suitable name for the document.
iv. Click on the save button.
v. Select a tick on the checkbox ‘save with a password,
vi. Type the password to open the file in the Set password dialog box.
vii. Type the same password in the second box and click ok button.
7. Write a short note on identation?
Ans: Indent is the space of text from the edge/margin of the page. The margin
settings are applied to the whole document or the text area but indentation sets the
space of the paragraph from the margin with respect to the rest of the text that is
below or above it.
Different types of indentations are:
Before Text/Left Indent: This option indents text from the left margin.
After Text/Right Indent: This option indents text from the right margin.
First Line Indent: This option indents the first line of a paragraph from the left
margin.
8. List the types of alignments.
Ans: There are four types of horizontal text alignments: They are left, right, center
and justified alignment.
9. What is character formatting?
Ans: Character formatting includes manipulation of size, style, colour, position and
attributes of a character.
10. What is Margin? Write about the different types of margins.
Ans: Margin is the gap between the edge and beginning of the text i.e. the outer
boundary of the text in a document beyond which the contents of the document do
not flow. Normally in a document, the default, margins are ‘0.9’ on the top and
bottom and ‘0.79’ on the left and right.
Left margin: The space between the text and the left edge of the page is referred
to as the ‘left margin’.
Right margin: The space between the text and the right edge of the page is
referred to as the ‘right margin’.
Top margin: The space between the text and the top edge of the page is referred to
as the ‘top margin’.
Bottom margin: The space between the text and the bottom edge of the page is
referred to as the ‘Bottom margin’.
11. What is Pair Kerning?
Ans: This option is used to adjust the spacing between the character or letters.
12. Write down the steps to assign a border to a paragraph.
Ans:
Step:1- Select the paragraph or place the cursor anywhere in the paragraph.
Step:2 – Click on the Format menu and then select the ‘Paragraph’ option. The
paragraph dialog box appears on the screen.
Step:3 – Click on the ‘Borders’ tab.
Step:4 – Select the requires ‘ Line arrangement’.
Step:5 – Select the desired ‘style’ and ‘colour’ of the border.
Step:6 – Click on the ‘OK’ button.
